I've lost friends over not telling them what my birthday is, isn't that super silly?

I have started to run into this and it's kind of amazing (in a sad way) that this creates a wall. I keep reminding myself, if this wall is necessary for them to put up, then it's worth it. I agree though that it is bizarre this mindless social custom of birthday is what trips people up and causes them to recoil.

Just tell them you don't celebrate it and would rather not say when it is to avoid temptation.

Yeah, I fail to understand why they feel the need to know that and why they think you're obligated to tell them.
