Did you learn anything new today?

I've, off and on, wondered why some eggs in the carton marked "Large" are smallish, as in no way near as large as the others in the large carton.

So off I went searching for an answer... thinking of course, that there must be some measurement being used to determine the size of an egg.

Yeah, I was wrong. Turns out the net weight of a dozen eggs has to be approximately 24 ounces (2 ounces per egg) for it to be dozen "Large" eggs, but that no egg has to be 2 ounces.

In other words, it isn't the diameter of each egg, or the weight of each egg, but the total weight of a dozen eggs that determines the "size" of that dozen eggs.

You're welcome 😁.

Another victim of corporate agriculture. When I was bedridden as a child, one of my chores was candling, grading, and packaging the eggs my parents were taking to market on Saturday because I could do that while lying in bed. As I remember my father had created a grading device based on size and whether the egg could pass through it or not.

Idk why but that was funny af

@Nanori 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ But who cares why, you got a good laugh and that's even better than learning something. 😁

I'm guessing with the variability in individual sizes it makes sense... Thank you for your intrepid investigation lol

How do they survive 🫠
@Convivial @assemblingaknob years ago when I was in primary school we went to an egg farm (it was depressing)...but we got to see the whole production line.
And things may have changed since then.
But the eggs roll along a fitted chanel that basically has gates in the bottom that have other channels like curved ramps that run underneath the main one.
The opening to these ramps are sized, and in the bottom of the main chanel, and start off small and gradually get larger.
I think there are multiple ramps for each size (I coukd be wrong).
Until only the large eggs are left traveling the original track .

Mind you, this was a small country farm and is possibly VERY different to larger manufacturers .
(Terrible sketch of egg sorting thingy )

@OogieBoogie sounds like what I've seen also... And no need for calipers lol

Most of the Halloween pumpkins are of no edible use after Halloween

@Ontheroad the cheap carving ones from the supermarket are mostly water. But as you say the wildlife can eat them.

@meggie incorrect Livestock love them!

@TrashCat yes it says that above

I've learned that if you mix in a little sip of coolant in your drink daily for several months, it might kill you.

heh nice one. Thanks, it's good information.

I think some of the egg companies cheat on weight. I had a dozen large eggs from one store and got one more dozen from another store. I compared the sizes and the last dozen I got was a whole size smaller. I have also noticed that the large eggs get smaller in the winter at some stores.

Very useful information. Thank you.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Yep, isn't that silly?
Ontheroad · M
@Scribbles Another automation process that I can understand, but an odd thing when you expect a certain size egg, like as advertised, when you buy them.

Unfortunately no

I must go measure my eggs.
Well that's kinda clever when you think about it.

Not only are the eggs sized as they travel to be carted, but they are also calculated to together amass a certain weight.

....which is something that seems obvious now you've highlighted it....but I never really considered before.

And it solves what they do with all the really small eggs - they use them to balance the weight in all the sized cartons .
Which IS something I always wondered, coz some eggs can be unusually small.

I love tidbits of useless information like this 🤗😅

Thanks for letting me learn something new before I even finished my first coffee🤗

@OogieBoogie I know all sorts of useless stuff 😁
That’s interesting, and I have wondered, because whether I purchase large or regular, the eggs look pretty much the same size. 🥚🍳
I certainly did, it could have started last night but I sure as hell knew about it this morning. 😈

@Nihiless Nope, not gonna ask 🙈🙉🙊
@Ontheroad Nope, don't ask, it is really good though. 🤫
