Is it trendy to be autistic these days?

Like not all the way but just a bit?
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
I have never met more autistic people than I have in the past 10 years... I think Doctors just say you're autistic or have ADHD when they can't figure out what your problem is... people who are gluten free is another one. 🤷‍♀️

@FreeSpirit1 It sounds like you got some bad advice
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
@uncalled4 it wasn't me

@FreeSpirit1 Sorry, I work overnights and I'm loopy at this hour

I think it’s good to have a label because you can get away with most anything

@Keepitsimple that’s a truly wicked thing to say

The media portrayal of autism has done it some favours in the way of acceptance and awareness but hasn’t done it much justice in terms of what it’s really like. When people think autism they think Sheldon Cooper and that’s cool cause he’s super smart and hilarious cause he’s odd. It’s really not like that.

No, it isn't trendy, but it is a lot better understood that autism isn't "you have it or you don't" and rather you can be more or less on the spectrum of autism. So it's more common for people to recognize when they display behaviors that are indicative of autism.

No - as you can see from some of the ignorance in this comment section, it’s still pretty shitty to be autistic. People still don’t understand that being autistic isn’t being “quirky” or “not good socially”… it’s having a fundamentally divergent neurological wiring than what most have. Autism isn’t some cutesie oddity, it’s a lens that effects your senses and basically filters the way you experience every single moment of every single day.

Anyone who has any social issues at all is labeled autistic anymore.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User People misunderstand what autism really is. One can display traits of autism without "being autistic." It's not like a physical disease, like an infection, where you either either sick or healthy.
graphite · 61-69, M
It's overdiagnosed.
SW-User
@graphite based on what?
graphite · 61-69, M
@SW-User We all know somebody who supposedly has it. Sometimes multiple people. Usually kids. I'm sure I would have been diagnosed with it 50 years ago, under the same circumstances as now. https://globalnews.ca/news/5798140/autism-misdiagnosis/
