So who else is a member of a sorority or frat?

I was a member of Phi Beta Yenta. For initiation we had to stuff matzo balls in our underpants and parade around the quad belting out Memory from the hit Broadway show Cats.

I rushed Phi Delta Theta, but my pledge class voted me out early on and I never tried to get into a frat again. Was your initiation “wild”?

I was a member of a fraternity, and our pledge period was challenging, ending in "help week" instead of "hell week." The process was demeaning as we pledges united as brothers, but there was no dangerous abuse or hitting. Our university was practically all male with no student entertainment facilities, so a fraternity was actually a fairly inexpensive way to have a social life. Otherwise, you had to go into the city for food and entertainment.

I pledged an academic sorority while in college, centered around music. The initiation process wasn’t as wild as with the social Greeks.

Nope. At my college, there were frats but no sororities. Seems the sisterhoods had so persecuted the daughter of an extremely wealthy family that she ended herself. They donated massive money to the school with one condition. No sororities allowed.

When they started hitting people with paddles -- this was circa 1969 -- I quit. Seemed too stupid a thing to deal with.
