Imagine a college kid getting a nice paycheck and not telling his family

I've known this to happen. While attending college a gf's bf..

Lived with his grandmother whom declared him as a dependent.

She was unaware of a Pell grants reissue of money the college refunded to his bank account.

I see this as something the average college kid would do. If you're 21 and not understanding how economics and grants and all that works; you're just enjoying the free money, probably not thinking anything of it
