I've been learning languages practically my whole life.

English has been my default language since childhood with French being a close second.

Then over the years, I've picked up on bits and pieces of other languages, too, such as German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese.

I was never good at it, not even the French that was a compulsory subject at school. All those irregular verbs and trying to remember the genders of inanimate-object nouns. Also it seemed taught purely as one of the subjects ending after five years in school-leaving examinations; rather than something by which millions of people live their daily lives in country whose coast lay a mere 70 miles across the sea from my bit of England. I was not to know that I would subsequently enjoy several holidays in rural France.

Oddly I am rather attracted to ...

Norwegian (from several holidays, and a pen-friend there, though she is an ex-pat Briton), and;

Welsh (I know just a few place-name words and the noun-adjective order as in French, and have a rough idea of pronounciation... not helped by my having lost many teeth). Nearest bit of Wales to me? About 90 miles away.

Even Latin - probably from recognising and respecting Graeco-Latin etymology in English, and my general interest in science. Those two Classical languages are used in taxonomy, physiology and geology; and of course the Greek alphabet gives us lots of Maths and Physics symbols.

I managed to teach myself a smattering of BASIC years ago.

Found Digital Research's "LOGO" totally incomprehensible despite its text-book claiming it was designed to teach schoolchildren something called "Structured Programming". It did not explain what that is!

I struggle with advanced software like writing MS 'Access' databases (totally non-intuitive), 'Excel' VisualBasic and using CAD.

JavaScript, C++, Python, web-site construction, OS tools, Assembler, etc. are all beyond me.
