Considering PHD

That has been in my mind for about a decade.

If you have one, tell me what is your life like? Do you work in higher academia? How is life that way?

My brother had one. He was valedictorian of his high school class, and was so intelligent and dedicated that he got scholarships for every bit of his education. He was hired right out of Indiana University and went right to work at Michigan State teaching Paleontology.

He taught there for 40 years before he retired. Life in the ivory towers of academia is political. There is a lot of back biting and one-up-manship among the professors. Particularly bad if you want to become department chair. Which my brother did...very briefly. It was a nightmare of horrible politics.

You have to publish, publish, publish...because if you don't you will never get tenure...and my brother DID. He published a LOT.

Your politics can NOT be conservative in the ivory tower world. You HAVE to be a liberal there. You really will have no choice. Otherwise your own students will take you down.

@4meAndyou thanks for the input

depending on your path/intent, it's becoming less and less economically useful to have college degrees, much less advanced degrees. if I were 18 now, I'd be looking seriously at skilled trades as a course.
PhantomMagic88 · 36-40, M
@dirge I already have a bachelors and masters, but I agree with you about the practical need in looking into the trades

I work as a licensed psychologist.
My master’s degree taught me what is known.

A PhD compels me to question it, extend it, and leave something behind that did not exist before.
PhantomMagic88 · 36-40, M
@Punxi If I persued this, it would involve me earning a phd over a decade since earning my masters. This would have to coincide with me still working in my career field at the moment :)

@PhantomMagic88 Ten years taught you what a classroom couldn’t, perhaps.

Now the PhD isn’t about starting over, it’s about finishing what experience began.
PhantomMagic88 · 36-40, M
@Punxi Ya know, I never thought of it that way...thank you :) I go back and forth on this option every year or so, as there are obviously many factors to consider, but you put it very well!

Do you have a research proposal?
PhantomMagic88 · 36-40, M
@SunshineGirl More like narrowing it down to a subdiscipline in my field, but not a research propsoal yet
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@PhantomMagic88 What subject area are you interested in?
PhantomMagic88 · 36-40, M
@SunshineGirl Theology

If it’s necessary for the job you want, then do it. If it’s because you feel it will make you more marketable but it isn’t necessary, then don’t.

Education only matters in education.

@BillyMack Thanks for the advice
