Is it time to update the lesson plan? Books written in 1950s still taught in 2024!

To kill a mockingbird written in the 1950s is still core curriculum in 2024. Inspires an outdated worldview. Wtf.

Its called lierature, teaches a lesson in morality. Read it again

@jehova What I'm referring to is your use of the word "oldtimer." And wouldn't you agree that saying "shut tfu" is hardly civil discourse? In terms of "ancient texts," my understanding is that description is usually reserved for things written considerably longer ago. I wasn't aware that there had been an academic shift toward classifying work more than 30 years old as ancient.

But moving on, are there books that you believe to be more contemporary and relevant when it comes to the themes of racism?

@EternalTide i know ur still wasting my time and flapping away. Have a good day.

@EternalTide stfu or is giving options as i recall stfu was a core principle in to kill a mocking bird.

it is still young compared to shakespeare, mark twain, homer, etc
jehova · 36-40, M
@lpthehermit i agree on that point

School funding simply cant afford to buy new books. Shame on public schools.
jehova · 36-40, M
@exchrist yet they give the administrators and politicians raises at least every other year.
DDonde · 31-35, M
It's a classic of English language literature.
jehova · 36-40, M
@DDonde racism and bigotry taught as modern. Poor figurative english taught as relevant. Shakespeare as an example.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@jehova I think it's more about teaching our cultural heritage. And I would say that TKAM is taught as a historical piece but also the story and moral of the book is timeless and still relevant.
jehova · 36-40, M
@DDonde and i disagree; though you arent "wrong". The internet changed the game the lesson in tkmb has mostly aged out but the teachers havent? Schools simply dont have money to buy new material. And parents want to have read the things their kids are reading so they dont have to read anything new (life is too busy to allow parental review).
