Adult Education

As of this very moment, if you could work towards earning a degree, what would it be in? I would pursue aviation. I wish I knew this when I was 18.

I have no desire to go back to school, even part time, since it is a lot of work, I already have a job to occupy my time, and I am old and just want to retire. Yet I love to learn. I watch a lot of educational YouTubes on science and history.

Where I work, if people want an advanced degree, they often will support the effort with time and money, as long as you stay a while. I never took advantage of it, but did take night classes early in my career to fill in some gaps in my knowledge. It was all free to me, except commuting to class after work was always a pain.

@JoyfulSilence I hear ya, this is more about finally discovering something you might be passionate about. When I finished high school I didn't have any interests but I finally do. Been winging it ever since. "College Day" at school sucked back in the 80s. When my youngest graduated high school almost 4 years ago, the whole college thing was different and interesting.

Good luck on your learning.

Two optional directions here. First. If you have a dream and a vocation , pursue it. Be the Doctor, the Vet or the astro physicist.. (Unless you want to be a lawyer, in which case, get a real job) Second. If you really dont have a direction yet, get a Business or Management degree. Because everything is a business, and whatever field you end up in, you will be better prepared and organised in it through knowledge of how to run and and understand how other inputs, like accounting, marketing and law factor into success in your endeavours.😷

I wish I had thought to get my PhD in psychology when I was younger. Now it would require too many sacrifices.

The only part of aviation that you can get a degree in is Aviation Management. If you learned how to fly and you acquired every license you needed to become an airline pilot, you would still not have earned a degree at the end of the day because no such aviation piloting degree exists.
CANDAULISTHUSBAND · 51-55, C
@SandWitch Well, I am wrong for calling it aviation. What is the correct terminology for wanting to become a pilot?
SandWitch · 26-30, F
@CANDAULISTHUSBAND
The correct terminology is called "becoming a pilot"!

Based on what an airline pilot friend of mine has spoken of frequently, is this very fact. You can get a private pilot license and call yourself a 'pilot'.

You can get a commercial pilot license but you cannot call yourself a 'commercial pilot' unless you actually have a piloting job where you're earning a living from your commercial pilots license.

If you are an unemployed commercial pilot, you are now called a 'pilot' again.

If you hold an airline transport license and are employed by a bonafide air carrier which has airline designated status by a governing agency, you are now called an 'airline pilot'.

But if you become laid off or otherwise unemployed as a airline pilot, you are now called a 'pilot' again.

@SandWitch thanks for clearing that up.
