Why the hell do government's invest billions of bucks in flying a few people into outta space?

We can't fly living things any further than what we've gone, because of radiation from long exposure in space.

Wouldn't it make more sense to invest money in discovering our unexplored oceans?

Everyday Benefits of Space Exploration
Examples of the impact of space exploration and its benefits for Canadians and all of humanity.

Subjects
Improving our understanding of the human body

Experiments performed in space help us understand the health problems associated with aging and sedentary lifestyles.

Talking on cellular phones

Long distance and overseas calls would be impossible without satellites!

Measuring pollution

Satellites help experts monitor and study air, water and soil quality.

Creating jobs in technology

Canada is a leader in space robotics, which creates employment for Canadians.

Monitoring climate change

Some satellites monitor signs of climate change, such as melting ice and rising waters.

Making scientific discoveries

Researchers conduct many important scientific experiments on board the International Space Station.

Performing risky surgical procedures

Some medical technologies are inspired by Canadian robotics in space.

Getting young people interested in science

Astronauts encourage young people to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Cooperating with countries around the world

Canada is a partner of the International Space Station, a research laboratory in space.

Transforming Surgery on Earth

Technologies for industry, medicine, and other applications.

Submarines are actually harder to build and use than spacecraft, believe it or not. They have to withstand an incredible amount of water pressure over a large period of time, while submerged in corrosive salt water.

Spacecraft on the other hand, just have to survive launch, keep the radiation out, and the air in. The lunar lander on the Apollo missions had skin that was basically as thick as a couple of sheets of foil.

Plus, have you seen the stuff that lurks at the bottom of the ocean? It's terrifying!

I would agree. Why try to go and destroy another planet like we are doing ours?
Fernie · F
@AlmostAnAngel and we most definitely ARE destroying this planet

The space industry utillises a raft of different scientific and engineering skills and often produces new bits of technology that have practical applications for things on Earth.

At the time it was thought that whoever controlled space could control the world. By having weapons in space one could set terms for peace or destruction.

You know, to find a habitable planet for us. Because End of World is coming.
Fernie · F
@Abood3033 No, it is NOT irreparable...we are selfish parasites who refuse to change our ways but if we DID… we could undo a lot of the damage we continue to do every second of the day. Any other planet we reach we will do the same thing to. WE HAVE TO CHANGE...WE CAN IF WE CHOOSE TO
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
@Abood3033 You can't escape human nature. If we destroyed this planet, we'll destroy another one.
Fernie · F
@SatanBurger It's what we do

Governments do not invest large sums of money into projects which do not benefit them, neither do they tell the public all they know...down the rabbithole...
Fernie · F
every time we "explore" something we destroy it and whatever lives there. Then we find a way to exploit. Humans are an evolutionary screw up
Space development returns something like $15 for every dollar spent.. so there’s that
Jackaloftheazuresand · 26-30, M
ain't nothing in the ocean going to be safe from the sun
SINAI · T
You should give them a piece of your mind.
JovialPlutonian · 36-40, M
So they can enjoy it lol
