Sometimes it's the indicator that a cold is beginning; other times it can be due to excess stomach acid. Tums or similar antacid is an easy way to test the stomach acid theory.

Effectiveness of Honey for Cough
Honey has been traditionally used as a remedy for coughs. Some studies suggest that it may have beneficial effects:
Anti-inflammatory properties: Honey contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may help reduce inflammation in the airways, easing coughs.
Soothing effect: Honey's sweetness and viscosity can coat the throat, providing a soothing effect.
Expectorant properties: Honey may help loosen mucus and make it easier to expel.
