Diabetics...what foods dont really increase your blood sugars?

My sister can have an omelette even, and it will raise her BS, despite it being all protein.

You have to select foods by sugar content and carb content. For example, an apple contains a LOT of sugar. Lettuce does not. An omelette, if it contains only eggs and nothing else, should not raise blood sugar.

Unprocessed meat, such as beef, chicken, pork, turkey or lamb, do not contain sugar. Fish, such as salmon, tuna and shellfish, are also free of sugar. Processed meats, such as bacon, cured ham and sausage, sometimes contain sugar as a preservative.

Non-starchy vegetables, such as kale, spinach, onions, cucumbers and mushrooms, have very little natural fructose and no added sugar. Cauliflower, bell pepper, bok choy, broccoli and asparagus are also on this list. Potatoes and winter squashes are starchy and higher in natural sugar content.

(Starchy veggies are corn, peas, and carrots).

Natural dairy foods such as low-fat milk and unflavored yogurt are sugar-free, though lactose converts to sugar in the body. Flavored milks and yogurts typically contain sugar. Unsweetened almond and soy milks don’t contain sugar, though flavored varieties do. Eggs, hard cheese, cottage cheese and tofu also don’t contain sugar.

Fresh or roasted nuts are sugar-free. These include almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, peanuts and macadamia nuts. However, flavored varieties such a honey roasted contain sugar. Plain nut butter doesn’t contain sugar, but some varieties of packaged peanut butter do. (Skippy peanut butter is one of the few varieties that contains no added sugar.)

@4meAndyou Thank you for the list, appreciate that. Are you diabetic too?
4meAndyou · F
@Baybreeze You're welcome. PRE Diabetic. I am trying, a bit unsuccessfully, to control my carb intake and sugars to bring those numbers down.

My best success, in both how I feel and in my numbers, occurs when I eat pre packaged salads for dinner, such as Kale salads, or Chopped Salad. Naturally your sister would have to use a sugar free salad dressing...but they are healthy, no work at all, and she might feel better.

Fruits raise your blood sugar. They are loaded with natural sugar
ronisme1 · 70-79, M
@bijouxbroussard im glad for you but all raise mine
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@ronisme1 Not all fruits raise it the same. There are charts showing the best fruits for diabetics. Whole fruit is a lot better than drinking fruit juice, the fiber helps with that.

@cherokeepatti you are correct in the amount they raise is different. Orange juice kills my blood sugar totals. But all fruits raise my blood sugar. And eating is a pain. Trying to keep a diabetic diet and a cardiac diet and a acid reflux diet at the same time is ridiculous. I just eat small amounts of all .

Put cinnamon in the coffee. It lowers your blood sugar
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@1olderguy20 yeah that might work but it can also cause some terrible heartburn if a person is sensitive to it. I can drink coffee and I can eat foods with cinnamon in them but the combo is way too much. Same with chocolate. I drank a chocolate-flavored coffee for a couple months and got some terrible heartburn till I stopped.
@Dino11 I’ve found that when I drink cinnamon tea before bedtime my fasting numbers are better the following morning.

It’s tricky. Fruit eaten with some food with fat helps keep blood sugar from rising so much. I heard this from a doctor telling someone else about it. I think food combinations may be a big part of this.

Literally almost anything will. But, some good snacks that are pretty low; Unsweetened peanut butter on whole wheat toast. Also Doritos.

If an omelette increases her blood sugar then she is not taking enough insulin.
Cheese and eggs have no carbs.
Baybreeze · 41-45, F
@Pfuzylogic But it shouldn't raise BS, its strange. We read online that even some protein snacks like peanuts has raised some people sugars...its a mystery.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Baybreeze
Peanuts are mostly protein and fat.
You are always safe with non processed food but BS readings can be flakey.
I take two readings a day and when i increased my units of insulin from 26 to 28 my BS drastically dropped. The level of Insulin is different for each person if you take it.

Eggs and protein gave no glycemic index. Fruits, some vegetables , and carbs do .

How high it raises her glucose levels is the question
SW-User
Maybe she needs to get her insulin checked. She should be able to eat a balanced diet
Scrambled eggs, with just a little butter don’t raise mine. Fruit like apples, strawberries, blueberries don’t raise it much, either. But it varies with people. A friend can eat a banana without spiking, but I can’t. I was told that an acceptable range after a meal is 100-170, but it should come down with subsequent activity.
