The Seven Stages of a COVID Death
The Seven Stages of Severe COVID-19:
Stage 1: Patient has been symptomatic for a few days and is beginning to struggle with breathing.
They are genrally admitted to the ER with poor oxy saturation levels.
Treatment includes antivirals, steroids, anticoagulants, or monoclonal antibodies.
Stage 2: Patient will begin to experience a "drowning" sensation. Patient will
require more oxygen and help with going to the bathroom and sitting up in bed.
Stage 3: Patient becomes exhausted by the effort of trying to breathe. Patient will
be fitted with larger oxygen mask that will be strapped tightly to the face to force
pressure into the lungs so oxygen can be delivered.
Stage 4: Breathing becomes even harder now. Patient is severly fatigued and oxygen
is critically low. Patient will be advised to speak to family for possibly the last
time before intubation.Patient will be sedated, intubated, fed through feeding tube,
given a Foley catheter and a rectal tube. Hospital staff begins turning the body
to avoid bed sores.
Stage 5: Patients who survive the 4th stage of the disease will now need an ECMO machine to
improve their condition. Not all hospitals are equipped with ECMO machines. The ECMO
machine basically works as a heart/lung machine. If no ECMO machine is available, treatment
administered in stage 5 will be continued as long as possible.
Stage 6: If the patient has survived to this stage the body is incapable of surviving without
invasive intevention. Tubes will be inserted into the chest cavity. The body swells due to renal
failure and dialysis will be required to filter out the by-products of all the drugs. The body
is so weakened and immune-compromised that many complications arise. Blood clots, fluid
accumulations, and low blood pressure are treated with vasopressors.
Stage 7: Patients who survive the 6th stage will not progress any further. Discussions with
family and pallitive care will take place regarding end of life. Patient will be relieved of
breathing tubes for final video call with loved ones.
