If the government were to shut the country down like new Zealand did how long do you think it would be before this virus is over.

I think it's a little too optimistic to think that the virus could completely die off purely through a temporary shut down. After all, COVID is still active in NZ.

There are vital services that need to be provided and people need to leave their house to eat or care for dependents. All of that provides millions and likely even billions of vectors for the virus to spread, and that's just on minimal economic activity.

The strategy many political figures are going with is a combination of lockdown, vaccination drives, social distancing, and mask mandates, but even that has not proven 100% effective anywhere. There's an increasing possibility COVID is here to stay for the long haul.

Personally, now that vaccines have been mass-produced and proven effective against the virus, I think a shutdown would end up being overkill. For the most part, the people dying right now are the people not taking their health seriously at all, and I doubt there's much the government can do about that. It's not like we've stopped drunk driving or smoking despite all the effort. I see it as natural selection at this point.

As far as overcrowded hospital goes, they could solve a lot of that with a triage system. Put the unvaccinated on a waitlist and reserve ICU rooms and hospital beds for the people that did things the right way. Make it something similar to the organ transplant system
the US is TOO BIG to try the New Zealand solution.
this will NOT be over for a long time. like the flu, only worse

The virus will not die , it will await in a dormant state until it has run its course n Earth. It will become active even in a closed system, just as all viruses do. The length of the virus active state is dominated by a conscious level born by the virus . When it's purpose in this reality is achieved it will disappear as quick as it came until it rises it ugly head again in the future
Or you could keep the country open like Sweden did. They’re almost down to zero hospitalizations and are removing what remaining restrictions were in place

When everyone is either vaccinated, had the virus or dead.
