Has anyone had surgery for an umbilical hernia?

I have one from doing those a machines at the gym. I probably wasn't even doing it correctly. I have been pushing in my belly button for awhile now and I know that I will eventually have to have the surgery. My stomach hurts and is badly swollen constantly. Has anyone here had the surgery? Could use some tips I guess.

Have you spoken to a physician about it?

@samueltyler2 only one time last year and he looked at it and said don't worry about it. I had gone to see him for another reason- pneumonia. But now I have to constantly push my belly button back in and my stomach hurts constantly and I am very bloated and nauseous all the time. I guess that's because of the hernia? I don't even know what kind of doctor to go to- Google says a gastroenterologist doesn't normally repair them and that I need a general surgeon but I don't know if I need a referral. Going to start calling Monday because I have to give a month notice at work.

@Mardrae the bloating is probably not and effect, but is the cause that the hernia is prominent.

@samueltyler2 I already have a ton of bad stomach problems, thanks to Covid

It will only get worse. I saw a doctor about mine and he played it down so some amount of time later I switched doctors because that one was retiring. I went to another doctor and he said it would be better to get it repaired. I wish I could answer your question on what kind of surgeon you need. I don't even know what kind of surgeon I had because the doctor said it all up for me. I was in and out the same day.

@Elisbch how long was recovery? And did they do it laporscopically? I know I misspelled that word. I found out I need a general surgeon. My endocrinologist set up a referral for me today but they haven't called me yet. I'm really worried about getting the surgery because my job is very physical and I also work out every day which is very important to me. I don't have many PTO hours left at work either. So I'm stressed about it

@Mardrae

I will answer you but I need to think about it for a day. It's been many many years ago. They did it laparoscopically. Three small incisions were made. One on my left side of my stomach and one on the right side of my stomach and also they went through my belly button. I'm not exactly sure but I think the camera went in through the belly button and their tools to fix it went through the other holes. My scars are so small you can barely see them. I need to think about my recovery because I have forgotten a lot of it but I will get back with you very soon. You will not be able to work out for a while and you may be off work for a while but I can't tell you how long. If I can remember exactly how it works for me I will let you know ASAP. That's what I need to think about. You will get a lot of answers once you visit the general surgeon.
May I text you privately tomorrow with more information? If not I'll post it here.
