I'd feel respected. Some think a first date should end with a kiss on the lips, but I think it would be too soon, no matter how pleasant the date was for both.

I would think that he's being respectful. I wouldn't assume anything just by that.

A guys perspective (this guys) :

A kiss on the head means " i cherish you and i feel lucky you are mine. I give that type of kiss after you have agreed to be my gf and we are going steady.

On a first date, if there is not enough chemistry yet for sex ( i do bang on the 1st date) and i think a kiss on the lips is too forward, i will respectfully kiss on the cheek, a kiss on the cheek says, "thank you for a lovely time id like to see you again and get to know you better, go deeper into our feelings"

A kiss on the hand can also by like that. Not having had a successful date for years I don't really remember what romantic kissing is like so I'd be ultra frightened of any move considered Creepypasta like if a date actually went well.

I'd conclude that his aim is off by quite a bit.
