@bijouxbroussard like my one my friends they wish to be called Black, not African American. They said they were never born there there. So why be called called that
bijouxbroussard · F
@HumanEarth Black is not "Negro" (unless you speak Spanish, and trust me, the folks who called me that, didn’t). I self-identify as Black, too, but I remember when and why the term "African-American" came about.
In the period after "Roots", many Americans were checking their family ethnicities, and became "Irish-American", "Chinese-American", "Italian-American", etc. That was also when "Native American" came into usage for indigenous Americans (so it’s been used for awhile, now).
When it came to us, we knew our roots were on the African continent, but because of the slave history, that was all we knew for certain. Even people with black Caribbean ancestry were the descendants of African slaves brought to that part of the Americas. So it made sense at the time.
The people (usually white) who have objected to us using the term to identify ourselves, trying to say that only people from Africa should identify as, "African-American",miss the point. Native born Africans are Nigerians, Kenyans, Congolese, Angolans, etc.
They don’t have to use any generic term, because just like most Europeans they know the countries their ancestors came from.
But today’s DNA testing has changed much of that. I now know definitively that my African ancestry began in Nigeria, Kenya and Algeria. My European ancestry began primarily in France. Some came to the U.S. by way of Haiti. And I have at least one Native American ancestor. I wish my grandparents had gotten that information.

@bijouxbroussard I understand your view point and accept that view point. Like me personally can technically fall under multiple of them categories. ”Irish-American "Italian American", "American Indian", "American -German", "American-Polish" and more. I am a person of ethnicities and a true American. Someone that is mixed with everything.
I am a mutt, I have a checkered skin family tree, if you shake it, you don't know what's going to fall out.
I have racism and bigotry in my own family and I was raised with along side of it. It took my grandmother to point out that out to me.
Sure, I may be rough around the edges, but I do care where I come from, where you come from and others. You can thank my grandma for pointing that out to me back when I was a teen and I thought I knew the world.

Life sure would be and have been a lot better for our indigenous.

Well. There was no indians in north america in that time period....
But if europeans never assimilated the native americans after killing alot of them off with disease, then the natives would probably have a huge advantage because europeans have to resupply from over seas wich takes a long time while the natives are trying to fight a guerrilla war on thier own territory.
Europeans would be far out matched. In the beggining of that era europeans still stood in line formations and marched out in a field while everyone else (anyone labeled as barbarian throughout history) would do ambush attacks and raids.
If it wasnt for diseases they would be far out numbered. They would have probably shored up the borders and never let another european touch this land again.
They would never know tax or imperial subjection and probably create a hierarchy built on spiritualism and reverance for the earth.
Of course they would still have internal wars and political issues but i doubt it would destroy the land in the process for politcal or financial gain.

@HumanEarth that didnt give any information other than some tribes allied with europeans.
Sure that happens but it doesnt change anything.
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend".
Were talking about the take over of an entire continent. The individual tribes or colonies are kind of irrelevant in the big picture.

@HumanEarth I have to wonder how much of that content was provided by Native sources ?

🤷🏻I don't know
WillaKissing · 61-69, M
Well, it would be an Indian Federation instead of the United States then I guess.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
In all probability Trump might have never existed.
bijouxbroussard · F
The country might again belong to the original inhabitants. Or the Europeans would’ve doubled down on their genocide of the indigenous people. 😔

Google this and see for yourself - How many Indigenous peoples or societies still exist?
Dainbramadge · 56-60, M
Probably the same as it did when white man first got here. :-)
But it is kind of hard to imagine how the arrow shooters could have done it.
I guess if we assume they were insanely good at gorilla warfare and were amazing at amassing forces in a flash and really bad ass with smoke signals and well..... you know.
