I think people use it to identify they are from Indian subcontinent.

If you say Asian that covers Japanese, Chinese, Indian etc etc etc

So saying Indian Asian I recognise what that means to me.
Adstar · 56-60, M
Indians are their own thing.. We call India the sub continent because it's culturally and genetically distinct from the rest of Asian.. In fact Asian is a false construct culturally.. You have the middle east ( part of Asian ) India, North east Asia and South east Asia.. All very different from each other,, All very unique.. They are lumped together, but it makes no sense..

As opposed to American Indian? Although I still wouldn't know if they refer to Native Americans or American-born Indians. Especially if an European said that because in many countries Indian means Native American.
Adstar · 56-60, M
@CrazyMusicLover Well correct it how? The native Americans never had one language, They never had unified term to describe themselves.. They had their personal names and their tribes name.. Ironically India did not have a united name until the European imperial powers decided to call it India and the people Indians.. Same goes with the names of the continents, all named by Europeans because the natives of those countries where never united to the point of coming up with accepted names for the continents they lived on..

@Adstar Like they did in English. Now it's natural to say Native Americans and everyone knows who you refer to as a group. But we don't need it linguistically because Indián means Native American and Ind means Indian.

Well it is better to say Native American because if you say Indian you risk confusion.. Some will hear Indian and think of dark skinned people living in India and others will think of natives of North or South America.. It's ironic that the woke insist on using the term Native American while they condemn to tern Indian as being somehow racist. when the term Native American is an English term derived from the same ""imperialists colonizers"" .. Ask a random native American and they might say I'm Cherokee or I'm Chinook or Navajo.. Maybe the woke fascists should ask the natives to have a convention of all the tribes in North America to produce a name they are all collectively happy with to describe themselves.. Instead of imposing culturally imperialists terms like ""native American"" LOL

Some people consider people from India to be asian tho it’s a foreign concept to me
Indian is Asian
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@HijabaDabbaDoo Interesting as here 'asian' has a totally different meaning - chinese, japanese, korean, thai, indonesian even. Indian is by itself in most people's definitions and probably would be clumped with Pakastani, etc.
@butterflybaby75 yeah, when it comes to South Asia the US is like "oh who let the Arabs escape" when they're entirely different cultures lmao
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@HijabaDabbaDoo Different perspectives of other cultural groups can sometimes trigger wars!
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
East Indian is
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
@Muthafukajones I've heard of that one, but 'indian asian' seems to be like a 'hash' of cultural identities.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
@butterflybaby75 You really don’t know how that happened?
Mordechai · 31-35, M
Isn't that just southwest Asian?
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Mordechai no, India is South Asia.
Southwest Asia is the South Caucasus, Anatolia, Mesopotamia, the Levant and Gulf.
Mordechai · 31-35, M
@basilfawlty89 eh close enough 🤷
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@Mordechai not exactly.
Culturally much different, different ethnic groups, language families and history.
It's like saying Scandinavia is the Ballans, just a much further distance.

India is in Asia.
As is the Near East and Middle East.
In Eurasia, anything south of the Caucasus, east of the Urals, and on the eastern part of the Mediterranean is Asia.
Uh it's like saying Chinese Asian
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
@PepsiColaP Chinese Asians?! I mean in Asia?! Whatever will we do?!
