A guy in IT just fist bumped me and said “My N” Being a white guy in my 40s, what is the socially acceptable response?

To begin with I thought he said it so I can, but then I wasn’t so sure.

A hearty hand shake is my comfort zone but I don’t want to be Edwardian about the situation…

"My Neighbor!!"
Miram · 31-35, F
"Sorry for bumping into you and hurting your Nuts! I didn't see you/them"
EndlessHorizon · 46-50, M
“Right back at ya.”

I think awkward silence would be my response

Or perhaps "what's up dawg"

In your best wasp voice

@Pretzel He seemed disappointed I didn’t say it back. He got a “cheers fella” and an awkward walk away for his troubles.

@WintaTheAngle yeah but in today's world if you had said the n word someone that heard it could file a complaint

Best to err on the side of caution
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
It’s a word best avoided
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
"Hey what's up" or to be really white "Hey good to see you" whatever is in your idiom.
@CountScrofula he said "cheers fella" he's already got being really white covered
Um..awkward ..unprofessional and inappropriate
@WintaTheAngle He sounds like he's not very self aware

@pripyatamusementpark Does he need to be? How long are we going to tiptoe around fragile people for?
@WintaTheAngle you know what? Do what you want ...
A knucke sandwich

Best to be Victorian about it: "we are not amused"
