Retirement Recommendations in the US of A

Financial experts said yesterday that if you want to retire this year, at age 65 all you need in your bank accounts is 1.46 million dollars.
In the United States, the median household income for 2025 is $83,592, which means that approximately 57.7% of households earn less than $83,592. This indicates that a significant portion of the population makes less than $80,000 per year.
(Actually 50 percent of all Americans earn less than $41,600 on average in a year. So 7.7% make between 42k - 80k.)
The average rent for an apartment is approximately $1,740 per month, or $20. 880 a year.
The average weekly grocery bill in the United States is approximately $270, or $14,040 a year.
The average monthly car payment in the U.S. is $537 for used cars, or $6,444 a year.
The average cost of gasoline people pay in a year varies, but the national average is approximately $2,448 per year, based on a monthly average of $204.
The average cost of full‑coverage car insurance in 2025 generally falls between about $2,100 and $2,600 per year.
The average U.S. electric bill is approximately $145 per month, or $1740.
The average gas bill in the U.S. is approximately $79.59 per month, with yearly costs averaging around $955.09.
All of which totals $48,607 on average for bare necessities, and doesn't account for The Median Income tax rates that will be taken by the government. Doesn't count health insurance, car or household repairs, cleaning products or clothing, school supplies for children, or any type of childcare, as well as many other daily expenses that are hard to avoid.
Want health insurance?
The average yearly cost of health insurance in 2025 is approximately:
$1,368 for a single person through employer-sponsored coverage.
$6,296 for a family through employer-sponsored coverage.
$5,964 for a single person on the ACA marketplace.
Want childcare?
The average cost of center-based care for an infant is approximately $13,254 per year.
Want to perform normal maintenance on you car without a surprise repair bill?
The average yearly cost of car maintenance is approximately $900 to $1,475.
Want to not be naked?
Women and girls: Average spending is around $545 per year.
Men and boys: Average spending is about $326 per year.
Households earning between $20,000 and $70,000: Spend approximately $1,700 annually on clothing.
50 percent of all Americans earn less than $41,600 on average in a year.
But yes, I'm sure that saving a suggested $17,000 a year (20%) of the median income of 85k is perfectly doable and "entirely possible"? And..., if you do manage to save $17,000 a year, it will only take you 88.24 years to hit 1.5 million dollars.

Are we great enough yet?
Are Americans and America really first?

Pfft!!!

Where do you get your figures? I'm in NYC, most overpriced in the country, and except for the rent, those are all extremely exaggerated.

And money doesn't just sit in a pile - pay attention and invest wisely. This is the best place to do it

i retired at age 58 with only 500K...i earned 40K gross or under the entire time and was out of work 18 months total. i earned just over 900K gross total.

Somehow, I think that if your story is true there are also other factors at play?

Maybe a stable upbringing with well to-do parents and a place for you to live for free into your 30s?

Your math doesn't align with the averages of the National US standards of wealth given your age bracket as shown and I think you are actually some type of shill

@HikingMan i started earning money age 8, i also spent several years in navy. being in middle of ocean you will save a LOT of money, i never married or had children. no college debt and i live a frugal lifestyle, driving a 2003 model car.

Yep.
Economic failure on a massive scale.

@Picklebobble2 Its actually much worse that he says. His figures are all correct. However the underlying hollowing out of the value of the $US by printing more has not been accounted for properly. The purchasing power of the $ in 10 to 20 years could be half that which is estimated there.😷

Currently i wouldent recomend you to retire in the US its a hell here espcially for foreigners.

Most people do not even live until 88 and even then, most people do not start working until somewhere between 15 and 22. People better get jobs straight out of the womb.

For how much is needed for retirement, I guess that depends on their own situation but doesn't take into account how long they might last. What if someone outlives their retirement funds?

The only thing we can really do at any point in life is minimize our burdens.
Do we really need the things we buy when the one we already have works fine?

I think this idea of retirement and how much is needed is basically pushed so that people work even harder at their mundane jobs. But then even when one does save, something will either wipe it out or put huge dents in it.

The Isreal influence upon US politics has purchased a world where the citizens of Isreal have universal health care and US taxpayers give Isreal Six Billion dollars a year in regular annual funding. It would cost the US 3 billion a year to do away with health insurance premiums and provide universal healthcare to Americans.

America First??????????

I think not.

I won't even go into the Iranian War thing which is costing American taxpayers 900 million dollars a day.
HoeBag · 51-55, F
@HikingMan I think what "America first" means for the rich Americans, not us everyday people.

One thing for sure, the elite do not give a sh*t about the average American.

tRump ain't done jack for this country except play out his revenges when he can.

Well presented. As much as politicians try to make happiness about "feelings" in the end it is about numbers.. Particularly if you dont have them. Nothing makes a person less happy than their family going without things they need...😷
