Is "American capitalism" simply an embodiment of Adam Smith's An Economic Man?

Characterized by greed and isolated individuals acting purely to maximize personal profit As such perhaps self serving capitalistic tendencies are ripe for a replacement? A service berry economy instead neighbors and communities providing for each other. Not for profit only but to foster well being and mutually beneficial outcomes.

Adam Smith envisaged the nascent capitalist system he observed as spiritually and morally fulfilling. Hence the idea of the "protestant work ethic" and other aphorisms that link capitalism to personal morality. It is only in recent decades that capitalism has become divorced from the society it is meant to serve and it is seen to be acceotable to pursue profit at the expense of any social value.

@SunshineGirl valid! Any thoughts of how we might return "capitalism" to its more community based roots?
Id observe that oligarchy isnt in the majority of citizens' best interests. Personally, i think age limit is a strategy that might help. There is a minimum age (35), but no maximum. The electoral college should be disbanded; the institution of slavery, which justified its creation, has been discontinued; therefore it too needs to be eliminated. And legislative term limits and\or consecutive term limits; in the legislature would help.

@jehova The principles are simple. Housing is for living in, not financial speculation. Banks are financing businesses, not creating millionaire brokers. Supermarkets are for making sure that everyone has access to heslthy, affordable food.

If private enterprise is unable to regulate and restrain itself from the worst excesses, the state has a duty to step in.

@SunshineGirl i agree the private sector profiteering off necessities has gone too far. And the majority of our nation's representatives are bought out. You and i boiled the entire thing down to its fundemental parts within a 5 paragraph exchange. Necessities of life shouldnt be privatized for profit. The accumulation of wealth by the few has threatened the survival of the many. Because of private interests taking precedent public control\ universal access public entities\advocates (government) must step in!
How long have politicsins(on both sides) been arguing about this? As long as ive been alive.
Can i be your running mate? 🤣
@SunshineGirl the first capitalists took slaves to remove the trees from a deserted island in the Mediterranean, and sold the timber to Portuguese ship builders. Next they used the remaining trees on the island and the remaining slaves to grow and refine sugar, and totally denuded the island of Madeira within fifty years.
New capitalism is like old capitalism. After the crash, they left.

@jehova No one pays much attention to me. I'd be a poor politician!

@Roundandroundwego Some capitalists did. Others used their profits to provide housing, healthcare and education for their workers. Some capitalists today share profits with their workers.
@SunshineGirl without socialism, no providing for everyone. Capitalism for the West, yes, yes, yes! Do, do take yerselves out for profit. Yup!
