The local pub (in the next hamlet) closed down and has since been reopened as a community project. Only open certain days / hours.
A group of four of us went there at lunchtime on Christmas Day. Open from 12 noon to 2 pm only, it was packed. Good fun, but a round of drinks for four left no change from a £20 note.
Yesterday, in a rare break from Britain's rainy weather, the same four, plus other family members went for a long walk on the common. Age range 13 - 84. There was talk of going to the same pub afterwards, but I invited them all back to my house, where a bottle of French Viognier, a bottle of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon and one of South African Malbec and a few glasses of malt whisky were consumed. The 13 y-o settled for 7up.
It was a convivial gathering. If it had taken place at the pub, it would have cost four times as much, and we did not need the 'pub atmosphere' to enjoy it.
Sadly pubs are being taxed out of existence, and their costs reflected in the prices they need to charge.

@emmasfriend Sounds like a great day. I feel that pubs are best for one or two people. In a good pub, even if you are on your own and hardly talk to anyone, you can feel as if you are among friends. For a large group, home is best!

I'm not much of a drinker, but I love old pub buildings and the heritage. Our "local", a traditional Victorian terraced pub, was taken over a couple of years ago by British-Chinese. They painted the exterior red and white, freshened up the bar area, and now offer a good Chinese restaurant/takeaway with a traditional English bar and pub games. I would probably be a regular if we didn't have kids 🙂

I used to love pubs, went every weekend with my mates and sometimes during the week to watch football.
All day opening killed pubs, people don't go out at the same time anymore so pubs are no longer 'buzzing ' like they used to be.
The ridiculous price of a pint doesn't help and proper pubs have been transformed into sports bars or restaurants, traditional pubs are hard to find..
I very rarely go out to the pub for the evening with mates now, usually a couple on tne way to football and a couple afterwards. I have a few beers or some of my homemade wine at home at the weekend.

@ArtieKat Haha! 😆 I think it would probably be called a session ale now.

@mossyboots I absolutely love Guinness! It shrinks the waistline on my clothes so I have to drink it in moderation.
it was my dad's favourite drink too, he let me have a taste once when he used to take me and my sister for pop and crisps in the beer garden, i was about 8 at the time and hated it, he told me I'd like it when I'm older and he as right!
I bought one of those Nitrosurge gadgets for Guinness, it says you have to use special cans for it which cost a lot more but I found a trick to make the ordinary draught cans work. It makes it even nicer, closer to how it is in a pub.
If you have a Lidl near you they sell pint size draught cans for around the same price as the standard size ones.
I'll remember the cleaning tip for my camping pots! 😀👍

I’ve never been one to enjoy hanging out in bars. I prefer focusing on my work and earning money rather than spending it on things that don’t add much to my life.
Plus, enjoying a drink at home is so much more affordable! It’s like having your own little cozy moment, similar to finding a good deal at a store.

@HumanEarth At least, at home, the bar is always open when you want it to be...

That is true

@HumanEarth I agree. It's nice to be home and enjoy a drink occasionally. I mostly have a nice glass of wine with Sunday dinner.

There is no pub (or bar, or whatever) near or far where I live, and that's why I'm not a pub-goer. I have to drive into the city to go into a pub.
Oh and I understood the old-school British pub is dying, with hundreds closing for good every month?

@TheThinker Thaaaank you!!! 🌷
MartinII · 70-79, M
Not, strictly speaking, regular, but frequent. I love pubs, even, perhaps especially, when I'm on my own. You can usually find someone to talk to, and even just sitting and reading on your own feels companionable.
meggie · F
I used to go more often, but rarely go anymore and don't miss going. There's very little atmosphere in the pubs now and they are very expensive. I just have a few at home now, or when we have home cooked dinner with others.

I really don't miss at all my pubs and bars days, at all! I'm a thousand times more fulfilled in my current lifestyle. I prefer the cafe's culture, in the day light and sober..
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I lived in pubs from teenage years until at 41 I fell into rehab. Now it's very rare I'm in a pub, obviously never to drink and I'm much much happier that way.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
When I was still drinking I would often go to pubs with friends because at least here you can hear each other and they are not much noisier than restaurants as opposed to clubs which often involved risking permanent hearing loss.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
When I was a young guy many of my friends liked to go to the clubs. I hated it. It was impossible to have a conversation. Also I wasn't crazy about dancing.
I preferred the local pub or bar. Setting around a table with other people drinking and laughing was so much more fun IMO.

Not really, no. There was a place on the corner where I’d stop by after work and have a drink, I was friendly with the owners and the regulars. One Christmas the bartender gave me a bottle of Absinthe.
But the thugs discovered it, and after a couple of police raids it closed. 😞

Not any more. When I was a pup I was heavily involved in a darts league (both competitively and as an officer), so spent a fair amount of time in pubs.
Can't drink alcohol anymore due to meds, don't drive at night, poop out early so the pub life is no more.

I am quite outgoing but have no trouble being alone either. I rarely go to a pub. On occasion I don't mind a draught or two. 😉
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
Not a pub person, except where there's decent food. I recognise the picture though. 😄
PhoenixPhail · M
I haven't been in a pub in probably 40 years.
I'm so introverted, the only person I really enjoy being with, is ME.

I used to frequent a bar in the 90s when my best pal worked there, we played pool, and darts.
helenS · 36-40, F
@FrugalNoodle Does it still exist?
FrugalNoodle · 46-50, M
@helenS I don't know it was a small town that I haven't been to since those times.

@FrugalNoodle Thank you 🌷

I used to spend an unhealthy amount of time in pubs in my younger years. Nowadays I tend to drink at home alone.

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout You would love the coastal brewing bar, cheapest schooner is $9.85
TheOneyouwerewarnedabout · 46-50, MVIP
@CreyvinMoorhead when I turned 18 all them years ago. A schooner cost $1.75.
I used to get fall over drunk for $20..
Now it’s $100 minimum needed for a pub visit

No, never really went to bars except when I used to play in bands and we played in the bar or I went with other band members to check out other local bands.

i was at the pub last night...came home had a couple of cocktails and now i/m being a couch potato

Last time I was in a bar was 1991. I had just started a new job and went out with coworkers after work. I had club soda. I was afraid I'd get drunk and take off my pants.

Nope, I don't know about the pubs
Lugwho · 61-69, M
I hardly ever go in a pub anymore. SW is my equivalent to a pub, where I can talk nonsense to friends or strangers.

Been fond of pubs since I was about 15

@pituitarypendulum Neither do I, but you can still go to the pub these days. 50 years ago it was not the same.
@FreddieUK that's true . Some good food to be had there .

@pituitarypendulum Not even milk? 😸

I've never consumed an alcohol-laden beverage in my life, but when I travel to England on business trips, my work colleagues and I will always hang out in a nearby English pub just to take in the wholesome atmosphere of a truly civilized Nation!
