I hear the government in Dublin are setting up yet another enquiry into abuse of children by a religious order.

I can't help wondering how many prosecutions have resulted in previous such enquiries, how much compensation has been forthcoming. The legal profession has doubtlessly benefited. Anyone else?

The late Polish pope John Paul II knew about child abuse in Poland's Catholic church years before becoming pontiff and helped cover it up. Karol Wojtyla, as he then was, knew of cases of pedophile priests within the church while still a cardinal in Krakow. He transferred the priests to other dioceses -- one as far away as Austria -- to ensure no scandal ensued.

@helenS They know all about clergy transfers over here too.

@alan20 The old "out of sight – out of mind" strategy doesn't work anymore, for them.

The preachers abused kids for years, collected huge sums of money frim their congregation and then disappeared.

@Travelbug Yet, some people are afraid of drag queens.

{@alan20] maybe also a case of tragic abuse never going unpunished because the perpetrators are so old and will never see they et there just desserts or have long gone to hell

Did people go to prison previously?
alan20 · M
@Crazywaterspring Not to my knowledge but I haven't followed it assiduously. What I did find astonishing was people who stated "It never did us any harm". From my own years at the Christian Brothers one of my classmates has become a priest. I just find much of it beyond understanding.

It's a problem here for decades, a lot of old men have gone to prison, one of the current schools being investigated is a fee paying school, very expensive too, imagine paying a lot of money to send your kids to a "good" school only for them to be sexually assaulted, beaten etc

@alan20 and another

@SW-User Thank you very much for your work. I'm glad to hear some of them met justice. Do you know of any of them paying compensation or are all these orders penniless, nuns as well. At my school a boy was actually hurled through the window by a Brother. The Principal expressed concern but he remained in place as our Irish language teacher. My mother was from Tuam. I'm sure I don't need to say anything further.

@alan20 I am not aware of financial compensation, though I believe victims probably will sue the state in that regard
