The Elgin Marbles are British

Why all the fuss from Greece

Actually, they are Greek. They were snaffled by a certain Lord Elgin in the 19C, without permission, and Britain has claimed them as UK property since.

There was a for a long time a real fear they might not be looked after properly in Greece, but that was probably when the country was run by a military junta, and no longer applies.

@ArishMell what Mr Banks means is Greece at the time wasn't up to guaranteeing there preservation, so Britain are the saving of Greek culture

@GovanDUNNY Ah, yes, I see. Yes, he has a point there.

Because the Elgin Marbles were transported from Greece?
Banksy83 · 41-45, M
@Longpatrol they wouldn't exist if not for Great Britain

Why are their inscriptions in Attic Greek then?

@BlueGreenGrey I. Agree we could loan them to Greece for a few million pounds a week as long as they dont try to keep them
