Since you grew up in the North of England, were you anywhere near the Yorkshire Dales, where James Herriot worked as a vet in "All Creatures Great & Small"?
DawnW67 · FNew
@Drummer We had family there yes

I grew up in Western Canada and had similar experiences. We would get one new set of clothes every year from a mail order catalogue. Rugged clothes that stood the test of time. Lots of hard work for the entire family. We lived on a farm/ranch and raised most of our own food. As kids we would help with the gardening and raising animals. I learned how to ride and drive horses at a young age then moved on to driving trucks and tractors before I was a teenager. My older cousin recalls that when she was 6 our grandfather (both her parents were dead) put her on the back of a saddle pony and sent them off to school. The school was a couple of miles away but imagine being a 6 year old girl riding your own horse to school with no older brothers or sisters to guide you.
My mum grew up in the 60s and 70s in Surrey, they lived on a council estate. She describes as typically as you growing up. I grew up in the 90s on an estate in Oxfordshire. We had most things. I moved to Suffolk in 1996 and this where I lived for 29 years. Life is refreshing here.
That sounds very interesting.
I was a child in the 60s, too, and grew up in San Francisco, California. I remember seeing the "Flower Children" when we’d run errands over in the Haight Ashbury. My mother was a teacher and we would occasionally encounter her students hanging out in the area. There were some difficulties in our country with the war and protests, the assassinations of our president and later his brother, and of Dr. Martin Luther King, who was very important to many of us.

Definitely different times.

Growing up in the North of England in the 1960s wasn’t glamorous, and it certainly wasn’t part of the "Swinging Sixties" you often hear about on the telly. We weren’t out in mini skirts

I was born in the early 50s, went to Grammar School in the 1960s (and moved to London in 1972) but Liverpool certainly didn't fit into your description of the North, Dawn.

Hi Dawn,

Sounds a lot like India (in particular Punjab) where people are out in the fields til dawn and clothes being repaired / passed down. My wife is 32, from Punjab and talks about her upbringing in the same manner.

Great post. I was born May 1965 and remember 1970 forward the same way as you did in your post. A way better time to be raised in than today's world in my opinion.

Central Ohio, USA. Columbus, Ohio for me not the UK.

My husband was born in 1961, I myself was born in 1981... Both of us grew up before the saturation of computers and cell phones me leaning into it in the end.. But not him, he's still old fashioned and I love that about him!
I grew up in a small town called Malvern. The hills was my play round. The winter gardens had a good stage and saw a few well known pop groups.

I grew up in Gosport , times were better than now , there was an atmosphere, somedays now are like Sunday every day. Swinging sixties meant best times since before WW2, music and fashion etc and a better outlook for Britain.

As kids om the 50's we had Robin Hood on TV.....then the Avengers came along...Mrs. Peal😘.

I remember it well, most people I knew were in a similar position. It was unusual for someone to even have a car.
What Brit movies from that era best exemplify what you wrote about?
Or - what were your favorite Brit movies of that era?
@DawnW67

I just may have those... if they're anything like Sat Night and Sun Morning or The Entertainer then all the better :D

EDIT: Just "The Family Way"

Infamous607 · 46-50, M
Why in Northern England??
@Infamous607 What beetles? Where what mod culture, nah - duhhhh... be darkened. Not knowing is annoying them away from telling you anything, ever! Perfect for you. Darkness. Never bother telling people whatever! Darkness. Only. And laughing.
Infamous607 · 46-50, M
@DawnW67 I mean, why was the situation like that in Northern England compared to the rest of the country.
Infamous607 · 46-50, M
@Roundandroundwego well, that's something.
Beyonce is without pants, but dressed in cowboy outfits, this year. The past retold without pants.
