If you are from the US and have visited here, did you really find the food bad as some say they did?

We do have steak and kidney pie, but personally, I prefer just the steak, and you would only get the chance to eat eels if you visited an a pie and mash shop as it isn't something seen anywhere else as far as I know.
Usually for those Londoners brought up eating it.

I was born in Whitechapel and lived in London my whole life...and have never eaten eel, and only had "proper" pie and mash once

Well duh, that's the good bit!!! I'm joking I'm joking and yeah I totally agree and it's probably the reason you don't just get kidney pie on it own as kidney is probably better for you than steak is but lets face it tastes pretty bloody naff compared to the steak.😆

Never tried eel though love but I'd happily give it a try as I bet it's nice.🙂

@AdaXI I have never seen kidney pie anywhere on sale, but must go back centuries if it ever was, but I'm not a fan of organ meats anyway.

I was surprised at the number of American fast food places, this was in 87. I was introduced to Indian food there and nothing here compares to it. I found the beef to be gamey tasting but the lamb was delicious. Pub food was hit or miss. Found a great fish and chips place too. One restaurant featured Southern Fried Chicken and I have to say it was very good.

I love English food, especially fish ‘ chips, Cornish pasties, and I used to bake steak (no kidney) pies when I was a teenager. I’ve not eaten eels, and have no desire to ever eat them.

When I was in London in 1995, I ate mostly at inexpensive (but good) Indian-Pakistani restaurants. Sometimes I had fish & chips, which I liked.

I’ve never eaten in the UK. France , Italy, and Greece 👍🏻
Very much the opposite. I loved the food there.

You need loads of vinegar on pie and mash liquor
akindheart · 61-69, F
well i have to say i don't like your mushy peas.
Let’s see…I had fish & chips in a pub, bubble and squeak, cottage pie in a private home, All delicious. And I had English breakfasts, also in that home where I was staying.
It was great. I have an English friend here who cooks traditionally when she’s homesick, so I’ve gotten to try other dishes.
As a Londoner, I can say I have never subjected myself to eels 🤢

Actually, an English breakfast would be good right now 🤔

That looks like pancakes and mashed potatoes.

@swirlie No idea why that is done, toast should hot and crispy. No racks!
