What is the best Canadian response?

Trump wants to prevent aliens from entering America from the north while doing nothing about aliens entering Canada from the south (this expected to dramatically increase under his intolerant leadership). Because Americans have ten times the population of Canada I think Canada should offer to post one extra border guard for every ten America does. This seems fair to me.

I really hope canada wont do nothing about trump implementing 25% tax on canadian imports. He really want to cripple our fragile economy

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow

What is perversely funny is most "American" cars and buses are made in Canada

What a joke.

Prove it commie boy
@Thrust Not my problem you have no idea how your economy works. I get that failing high school is a badge of honour on the right and all.
@pikminboy
There's where your misunderstanding lies. Canada does not have a fragile economy but the USA does. Even if Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods entering the USA and nobody in the USA buys it, Canada has already made alternate trading plans with other countries around he world to trade with since Trump took Office in 2016. In addition to that, only BUY CANADIAN! Don't buy anything that is made in the USA and the BS will soon stop between Trump and Canada.

Just keep on being Canadians...i think that will be enough ;)

Rich US Democrats escaping the US to the north will likely be welcomed with open arms by Canada. Not very rich Democrats can expect a bit of resistance.

Meanwhile, us non-Democrat Americans will cheer their exit and thank our Canadian neighbors to process them ASAP. Oh, and please don’t tell them about how a long stay in Canada may affect their US Social Security and Medicare accounts.
JPWhoo · 36-40, M
@Heartlander Canada’s healthcare system in particular and social safety net in general are superior to America’s. Any American lucky enough to move to Canada won’t miss Social Security or Medicare. The same obviously would not apply to any red states seeking to secede and reform the Old Confederacy, as was discussed when Biden became president.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@JPWhoo If they move to canada and not return, they may forfeit all their contributions to SS and MC. If they do return to the states the years they were contributing to the Canadian systems is lost, and the missing years can have a big effect on their US retirement entitlements. There is even a possible scenario, though rare, where someone may contribute to both US and Canada systems and not qualify for either.

Comparing the two systems, just on pension plans ...

Average CPP (Canada) retirement benefit = $816/month, maximum $1,364 per month
Average SS (US) retirement. benefit = $1,784/month, maximum $4,873/month

Personally,I'd prefer to get $1,784 a month rather than $816 a month, regardless of whether it's in Canadian or US dollars :)

Totally fair...and equitable.
Trudeau when to see Trump, and he did. Perhaps something has been or will be agreed to on the issue. It’s a problem plaguing both nations and laws on both sides need de evaluating.

No, not aliens. Illegal aliens. Those who enter the US the legal way have nothing to worry about. And I think Canada should have strict regulations as to who enter the country, as well.
Until there are universal rights for everyone and everyone is welcome everywhere you understand that's injustice. You prefer disgusting wars and border walls.
SW-User
@Roundandroundwego Everyone welcome everywhere is a lofty goal.
@SW-User it's basic human decency and international law since 1948.
The best Canadian response is to do nothing at all in response to anything Trump rags on about. The USA needs to get their own house in order before they start looking at their neighbors.
@Pretzel
I thought the same thing at first, but then took a step back and actually wondered if Trump's plan to clean house would make things better or much worse for Americans?

The problem is, it will take more than 4 years to fix or dismantle what needs to be addressed in US government, but if the next POTUS after Trump doesn't continue in that same direction, then nothing Trump does to clean things up actually comes to fruition because little of it will have been brought to completion in only 3 years, realistically speaking.

Now things would be in a real mess because how does the next Administration after Trump put it all back together so that it's a functional government?

What I honestly believe is that Trump will not do anything dramatic insofar as his threat to dismantle the government agencies he feels are redundant is concerned, because like a house of cards, the whole thing will just collapse if that dismantling process is attempted in the incorrect order (whatever that is).

@swirlie I think we agree on the ultimate outcome. it's like holding your hand up and trying to stop a freight train.

He is the head of only 1/3 of the government. And while he has handpicked several of the justices in the supreme court - they still have to go by the law (ostensibly).

the civil service is gigantic. the Congress will have to go along with a lot of the changes - and they would have to kill lots of jobs which would increase unemployment.

I can imagine a lot of unrest in the Congress since they are about evenly matched and just a few "defectors" could kill a republican initiative.

yeah, these will be interesting times.

There have already been two attempts to assasinate him - and the recent United CEO murder...show people are getting antsy. And we aren't even into summer yet.
@Pretzel
If Trump starts to make changes quickly, I mean tangible changes that people can actually see, then I think he will calm the angry masses before they get too far out of control. But I don't think he has any time to waste because as you've inferred, the natives are getting restless.
