🚙 How far is your home from the downtown center?

I live 15 - 26 minutes away. 😁

In the US, people who live in the NYC area are famous for measuring distance in terms of travel time, because with the heavy traffic, actual mileage is irrelevant.

I grew up there, then I moved to the central part of the country, where people talk in terms of miles. And there is plenty of open space, so they talk in terms of lots of miles.

When I looked again at maps of where I grew up, I was shocked to see how close together everything actually was -- in miles, not in minutes!
@DrWatson
That’s always the case with the busy metropolis. The traffic congestion makes people’s days very unproductive.
DragonFruit · 70-79, M
@CookieCrumbs @DrWatson I’m about 30 mi. from downtown Manhattan, NYC....but it can take an hour or more to get there.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@DragonFruit I used to commute in from Southern Connecticut. It can take longer than that too. Much.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Two minute walk. My town has 3,000 people lol
@CountScrofula
Do you know most of them? 😉
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@CookieCrumbs No, but they know me lmao. My mom used to be the mayor.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@CountScrofula wow we have a celebrity on this thread !
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
40 plus miles
@Fungirlmmm
Anytime of the day?
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@Fungirlmmm that is texas
Repete · 70-79, M
I live downtown, well if you call it that. One post office ( across the road from me) , one DG store , one gas station, and one restaurant ( good food and usually no waiting to get in. That’s also next to my apartment. ( big town)
originnone · 61-69, M
We don't have what I would call "downtown." Philadelphia is about 45 minutes. There are night life towns within ten minutes....
calicuz · 56-60, M
@originnone

I've passed through Phili, and had lunch in your downtown on a layover. I like Phili, it's very nice.
originnone · 61-69, M
@calicuz I used to go there a lot to play. Now I spend a lot of time at the hospitals.
TexChik · F
About 400 miles .
@TexChik
And how long would it take you to get there?
TexChik · F
@CookieCrumbs 8 hours by car , About 90 mins by plane .
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
We don't really have a downtown 🤔 We have a, elementary school, town hall, library and congregational church. That's it, for a town of 1,800 pop.

I live 10 minutes away
@dontbekoi
Are the residents mostly next generation of older families? Or do you still get people from other places relocating there?
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
@CookieCrumbs I actually moved here because this small town is right next to a "college town" - - all of my neighbors, on my dead end street, are "transplants" from other states (they either discovered this area because they went to college here or they work at the university. It's awesome. We have the small town feel without the small town mentality 😉 Plus we are an hour from a major city (not too bad)
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
Any where from 40 minutes to an hour and 20 minutes depending on traffic.
(24 miles)
@GJOFJ3
I have to convert miles to km! 😅
originnone · 61-69, M
@CookieCrumbs or to grams....
Yup that's us. My town is small, i live way out on the far outskirts. I am about 5 minutes out of town
About a mile. Maybe two depending on what part of downtown I feel like calling downtown.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
About 8 miles or so.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M
@CookieCrumbs it’ll be a higher number. 😏
@Ambroseguy80
I know ( as if that makes a difference in the driving time) 🥸😜

5 blocks - but a town of 900 souls. Not large at all.

We were in a stop-n-go in the metro earlier this summer. I was kinda sorry I wasn't by myself. 1 - because they whine about it when we're as responsible for the traffic as any other car and 2 - when I lived in the city I would use my heavy traffic time to almost 'meditate' ... to ponder my issues. I worked long hours back then so I was rarely in the worst of it - arriving before the rush and going home after it.
About 5 miles
@BizSuitStacy
Yikes 😬
@BizSuitStacy thanks much easier for us Canadians to understand 😉
That's what i say. Tell them oh about an hour away.
@Bexsy
And you add: “depends on how patient of a driver you are!”
@CookieCrumbs exactly! And depends if you remember to turn right at that old red barn
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
5 minutes by car. 15 minute bike ride. My city is only about 100k.
About 400 meters, or 2 minutes by bike.
@NerdyPotato
How convenient!😎🥸
HannibalAteMeOut · 26-30, F
Just 3.5 km or like a 45 minute walk.
@HannibalAteMeOut
Cant beat the convenience of living that close to everything 😊
HannibalAteMeOut · 26-30, F
@CookieCrumbs Ι love it

@CookieCrumbs

I'm sure I'm guilty of that without even realizing it.
akindheart · 70-79, F

@akindheart
Reasonable traffic?
MarineBob · 61-69, M

SW-User

BLP11520 · 61-69, M
Less than two miles but it’s a very small rural town and Main Street is on a state road with only a small public greenway
Adogslife · 61-69, M
I live in the burbs. It’s about 8 minutes to the downtown section and about 22 minutes to the state’s city/capital.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
Small downtown 7 minutes walk
Middle downtown 15 minutes train
Big downtown 35 minutes train
It takes me 40 minutes in the morning and an hour in the afternoon to drive 25 Km or 15 mi to and from work!
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
That would be 'bout an hour, ten minute bike ride from where I live
scooogy · 31-35, MVIP
If I were mean, I'd answer in planet distances, like to the moon and back. 😐
CassandraSissy · 26-30, T
About 20 minute walk....probably 30 mins in these heels! *Giggles*

😘
Matt85 · 36-40, M
a 17 minute drive
Keeper · M
10 mins 😁
In SF (and most of the Bay Area, now) distance is measured in BART stops. I’m roughly two stops away.
@bijouxbroussard
That’s interesting. What’s the usual interval of the BART stops?
@CookieCrumbs About 5-7 min between most stops, a little longer for further regions.
SW-User
