Is it considered a contact sport? I'd rather watch a chess match.

@PatKirby Fair points. To me seeing someone score eery few minutes takes away the appreciation of the skill and the build up play, takes away the excitement of a goal too if you are seeing one every 5 mins.
I've never understood American football..the rules I mean. Also it seems to stop and start very often.
It definitely is a part of how we were raised and our different cultures.

Not necessarily every few minutes, but not waiting way too long either. There's a sweet spot I suppose. If I get up and get a beer at the snack bar (or make nachos or popcorn in the kitchen) and come back to a score or two then yes, that's too fast. The defense is not doing their job.
As you probably already know, American football developed from rugby. It's basically about earning the most points by taking the football into your opponents end zone behind them by passing or running the ball. You must earn at least ten yards on your way there (the end zone) before your opponent tackles you down. You have four of these 'downs', or chances, to earn your next first down/ten yards (game clock stops on every down). Otherwise, if you do not make at least ten yards on the way to the end zone the ball is turned over to your opponent, and it is their turn to try to get into your end zone behind you.

It's the struggle to earn your goals, figure out your opponent's strategy, and make proper adjustments while playing out the clock. Doesn't really matter what specific sport it is. Tennis, bowling, race car driving, it amounts to the same thing. Some sports are more aggressive than others, however I do enjoy watching a good game of chess. It is considered a sport, just played from the neck up.
