The royal centre of the kingdom of Northumbria . . capital of an archbishopric and alternative residence of English kings for about 300 years . . probably the fifth most prosperous city in England when America was being colonised. I guess someone must have liked it . .

At the time I believe York was the 2nd largest city in England , and CT has a new London
