@BijouPleasurette One of the most widespread names in the world. In Poland, my ancestral country, the equivalent boys name is Karol.

@SunshineGirl And Karol is sometimes anglicized as Carl or Karl. And a millenium ago there was the Carolingian Empire whose rulers gave birth to Charlemagne AKA Charles the Great AKA Karl der Große AKA the original Holy Roman Emperor.

@SW-User Carolus Rex? Sounds like an obscure dinosaur. Lol :)
@ElwoodBlues There are plenty of guys in my area called Carl (or Karl), but none called Karol. It's too much like the very girly name Carol.

Historically, the Americas (North, Central and South America, respectively) were called the New World.
So it became, that the Thirteen Colonies in what is presently called the United States of America was called New England as it was originally settled upon by the British.
And in keeping with that, the Thirteen Colonies were aptly named after places in England with the addition of adding "New" to the names, i.e. Hampshire became New Hampshire, York became New York, Jersey became New Jersey and so on.
Likewise, the Province of Québec in Canada was originally called New France on account of it's first settlers being from France.
