What can a first time tourist to Los Angeles expect ?

AbbeyRhode · F
You can expect to wish you'd gone elsewhere.

@Nimbus SF has a lot of the same problems - homelessness all over the place, a city government that coddles criminals instead of prosecuting them. But you've got to see Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz (book boat tickets several weeks in advance), Coit Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, SF Zoo is nice too (although I like Oakland Zoo better).

@graphite 👍

@Nimbus Also, if you go to SF and rent a car, DO NOT leave anything visible in it. Even a bag of old, dirty gym shorts might draw the curious. If you rent a hotel in SF, in place like Union Square, there are plenty of Uber drivers, taxis and, yes, even the cable cars to get you around town. Try to not even rent a car.

Homeless encampments all over the place.

@Nimbus everywhere tbh. Homelessness is a huge problem down there

@graphite A higher up city employee had to have his leg amputated after walking down the sidewalk to the building where he worked in downtown. There were germs there that infected him & caused flesh-eating disease.

It’s not like it was a few decades ago, probably best to go to a national park or somewhere away from that mess. It takes hours to get across the city and go anywhere, traffic is congested, many of the beaches are not safe to walk without wearing some foot protection due to needles & other things being tossed out, tent cities in many areas. Sad what L.A. has turned into. And it’s expensive too, I can’t see staying there unless you have friends you can visit & stay with.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti Yep, it's changed so much since I was there.

@Nimbus Do check out In-N-Out Burger, though. There's one at Fishermans' Wharf in SF and all over the place in LA. Prince Harry loves the place.

@pentacorn By what?
pentacorn · F
@Nimbus mostly everything

FWIW, I like going to LA. You might want to stay away from the downtown area and parts like South Central LA, apparently. But there's lots to see and do: Disneyland (about 30 miles south), Dodger Stadium (off Route 5, not far from downtown), Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica Pier, Reagan Library in Simi Valley, etc.
Ice served in their drinks

@SStarfish I guess so :)
