We laugh at your country and leadership now. Soz
As a Brit married to a Texan, it took him a week before he turned to me and shook his head and said they're the laughing stock of the world.

@0uijaFinger Who is the laughing stock, and why does he think that?

@paul98654 Please explain, I want to know.

I have been to America many times, and have always found a stunningly beautiful country, full of friendly people. Last time I visited was in 2015.

Since Trump, though, America has taken a dark, dark turn. People I know who have visited there, particularly in the last year, found it a dark and very different place, particularly in Florida. A lot of racist abuse there suddenly. Plus, I know at least 2 people who were refused entry because of social media posts they had made about the "regime" (I won't call it a government).

This is Fascism 101. I'm not going back there until the Republicans are gone.

@Waveney That's not true. Nothing has changed. The POTUS does not change any of the
things you love. The black, brown and Asian soccer fans are not experiencing any more racism
than any other time. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but the POTUS does not change anything.

It's the same country as when Obama or Biden was in office. Nothing to be afraid of.

I do understand that people hate Trump so much that they would say things like that
just to make a point.

If it were true, soccer fans would see it. If they do see any, it would most likely be in
New Yorki City.

@DogMan

Well I'm sorry, but people I know personally have said differently. And just like there are "millions" of YouTube videos saying how great America is, ALL these videos have been made NOW, during the World Cup. Let's see what happens once the show leaves town...But for now, there are just as many millions of videos telling people it is not worth the risk travelling to Trump's America.

Sorry.

the POTUS does not change anything
are you actually serious...?

Multiple independent empirical studies, civil rights tracking reports, and FBI data indicate that reported racist incidents and hate crimes have spiked significantly during Donald Trump's political prominence and presidential administrations.

Data from federal law enforcement, civil rights monitoring organizations, and academic researchers point to a clear trend of increased reported incidents coinciding with his campaigns and periods in office.

Federal and Civil Rights Data Spikes

FBI Hate Crime Data: Federal data revealed an anomalous surge in hate crimes immediately following Trump's initial 2016 election. This represented the second-largest uptick in hate crimes recorded in modern U.S. tracking history. Annual hate crimes remained roughly 20% higher throughout his subsequent years in administration.

Immediate Post-Election Surges: The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) documented roughly 900 bias-related incidents targeting minority groups within just the first ten days following the November 2016 election.

Targeted Increases: In the first half of 2017, anti-Muslim hate crimes surged by 91% compared to the same period in 2016. Concurrently, anti-Semitic incidents—including threats, cemetery desecrations, and bullying—rose by 86% in early 2017.

2024 Election Aftermath: Following Trump's return to power in late 2024, a fresh wave of highly publicized racist incidents occurred. This included coordinated, racist text messages sent to Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ Americans across at least 25 states directing them to "report to a plantation".

The "Trump Rally" Correlation: Academic researchers have established a specific statistical link between Trump's physical presence and localized spikes in bias incidents:

Doubled Incident Rates: A widely cited study utilizing data from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found that U.S. counties hosting a Trump campaign rally experienced a subsequent hate crime rate nearly double that of statistically similar counties that did not host a rally.

Perpetrator Motivation: Localized studies, such as research tracking hate crimes in Florida, noted that up to one-fourth of apprehended hate crime perpetrators explicitly cited Trump, his rhetoric, or his executive policies as the direct motivation for their actions.

Public Perception and Dehumanizing Attitudes

Data also tracks a shift in broader social permissions regarding public bigotry:

The "Counternormative" Effect: Social scientists note that Trump's direct rhetoric—often targeting immigrants, minority journalists, and specific religious groups—functions as "counternormative" behavior. It effectively lowers the social cost of expressing bigoted views, emboldening individuals to voice prejudices they previously kept hidden.

Pew Research Findings: According to data from the Pew Research Center, 65% of Americans reported that it became noticeably more common for people to express racist or racially insensitive views following Trump's rise to the presidency. Furthermore, over 40% stated that expressing such views had become more socially acceptable.

While it is methodologically complex to isolate a single politician as the sole causal mechanism for national prejudice, the empirical consensus from law enforcement data and civil rights organizations demonstrates that racist incidents have measurably surged in lockstep with Trump’s political power.

They likely get a lot of that from rancorous political arguments among Americans on [anti?]social-media; but years of an endless violence-fest from American film and TV-show makers hardly give their nation a good name.

As for "...reading that they are told..."... What were you reading, and who did it say does the telling?
DogMan · 61-69, M
@ArishMell The Europeans said that their media lied to them about the U.S. They are told it is
a dangerous place, with a decaying infrastructure, and rude people.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@DogMan Which "Europeans" (in nearly thirty different countries) and which "media", though?

I smell a rat. One placed anonymously somewhere to create divisions between European countries and the USA, perhaps.

There are good and bad, highlights and problems, in every country though one aspect of the news is that even where fair and accurate it seems to tell us more bad things than good.

With global news as advanced as it now is we, in the UK, are given the same information as quickly as you in the US.

@GuyWithOpinions Maybe stop killing people over natural reasources and misguided lies?

What does that mean?
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@DogMan well humans are social creatures and we have discovered that we work best in groups so we identify our selves as kingdoms or nations. much like how you are comprised of many cells to make a body, many of those bodies together create the entity of a nation. At the top of a national identy we elect a representative to be the leader to move our nation forward and create a history. We define our nations with imaginary boarders on the land and claim ownership of the reasources within it. As we expand we often find ourselves in need of reasources in places other nations define as thiers.

An archiac strategy commonly used to obtain more reasources is war. Though becausse we still stick to the principles of hierarchy, our leaders often decide on this princple regauedless of how the rest of us feel about it leading to instabilty withing our national body. To counter this or to gain aproval, they often lie or tell us what we think we want to hear. The repercussions of this can last for decades leading to generations of misinformation and mistrust.

Another alternative is trade but by utilizing our archiac hierarchical system in combination with the feeble heart of man can cause even the most humble person to be come currupt with the desire for power and wealth.

We are soon changing our systems but many are resistant to change. There will probably be war.
