Do you agree with the growing anti-empathy Christian movement?

I wasn’t aware, so I looked it up.

I found out that there is a genuine debate about whether empathy can be misused/overused. There is not a strong case that empathy itself is anti-Christian.

Empathy means understanding another person’s feelings and perspective. This is not the same as agreeing with them, or endorsing every choice they make.

Our compassion should not replace moral judgment.

@CookieCrumbs I don't read it as empathy being anti, or even merely un- Christian; but rather as a peculiar idea that Christians need not be empathetic.

I do agree that empathy might be used badly; but so can any human emotion; and that is neither religious nor irreligious.

The difficulty comes when religion is used to abrogate personal responsibility for bad purposes, needing the rejection of empathy.

@CookieCrumbs oh, well sympathizing with evil would be bad, but caring for someone and wanting good for them and repentance would be good

Discernment and distinction are important

@CookieCrumbs Precisely. Charlie Kirk was trying to politicize the word.

No, and nor would Christ. "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)

The Good Samaritan just got cancelled.

I’m not a membership card carrying member of the god squad, but wasn’t empathy a core pillar of Christs message?

Bargain bucket Christians.

And they’re calling themselves Christians? They clearly didn’t receive Jesus’ message!
th3r0n · 41-45, M
I don't like labels and tags for anything like that, or any concepts being "Christian" that aren't directly from the Bible and in line with the surrounding context of where it came from

It sounds like not caring about people from the label though, and I don't like that and God doesn't either

People are insane

Never heard of them. Sounds like a very badly thought out cult to me.

🤔

I don't agree with any movement that seeks to diminish human empathy.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Not aware of it but it would appear to be in contrast to their beliefs so is it really Christian...
ArishMell · 70-79, M
That sounds a complete self-contradiction.

Without reading the stated aims and principles of this "movement", if such it may be called, it's hard to judge it fairly, but the phrase alone implies cold-heartedness using Jesus Christ and his teachings to excuse it. A very feeble excuse at that.

@ArishMell I think he is refering to Charlie Kirk's claim that empathy is a woke idea. Sympathy is the true Christian virtue.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@JimboSaturn Whatever Kirk was talking about, whether sympathy or empathy, it's tragic that any constructive human emotion or reaction should be so rejected.

Especially for vague, pseudo-political reasons not even explained in proper English.
Uncfred · 70-79, M
Contradiction of terms.surely.
