What if we stopped asking God to change our circumstances, and started asking Him to change us through them?

I've always felt that undesired circumstances were to help us realize change is necessary, sometimes us sometimes others.

Beautiful and I think he does change us through our circumstances.

God is a heck of a lot wiser than WE are...so, what I MIGHT ask God is to allow me to live according to HIS will.

I ask for both. Change the circumstances to where I can succeed, and give me the strength to do it.

The latter is how he does it and it's all for His glory.

Then you would have a coping mechanism for why you suffer in this life and a post hoc rationalization if you can identify anything positive from it.
