There a couple of mistakes here:
1) Genesis chapter 2 is the
older text and
2) The Bible is not univocal. It's a collection of different writings for different audiences with different beliefs.
We'll come back to that when we discuss the second contradiction between the two chapters.
But the fact is we can't escape the different order of creation between the two chapters. It's not a simple matter of adding detail, the order of events in the story are different.
Gen 2 has god creating man and then deciding it is not good for him to be alone:
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Then we have god rectifying that issue by creating animals to be a companion:
And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam Then we see that none of these were fit to be a companion:
And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;
but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.[/u][/u]
Finally god puts Adam to sleep and makes a woman.
It is clear from narrative context that it makes no sense to impose the pluperfect " had created" because we see the order of creation being in response to a need stated within the text of the story.
This brings us to the the major contradiction in god's nature: IS god infallible or does he make mistakes?
Well according to Genesis chapter two, yes he does make mistakes. Because he made Adam, saw that it was not good for him to be alone, attempted to make animal companions but that failed as well. Finally, by trial and error god creates a woman to be the helper.
Genesis chapter 1 (which was written after 2) holds that god made each thing and and saw that it was good.
No mistakes.
That's because they were writing to a different audience with a different imagining of god. While Gen2 god is a corporeal being who makes noise as he walks through the cool air of the garden and needs to tinker with his creation, the god of Gen1 is ethereal and non-corporeal and makes everything perfectly according to plan.
tl;dr No. No this is not two version of the same story story with the second providing more detail to the first.
