A lot of people are missing the point in the comments. Pursuing an education, even it being in the arts , is not entirely about making a living. If that is your only goal alone ,then you have missed the point in being in further education in the first place.

@PepsiColaP and that's why parents expect teachers to teach only about numbers and physics laws and then they wonder why "humanity is lost".

@Kwek00 science is a leftist scam
Oh like that one dude here who claims schools are a scam and that he has made a fortune out of crypto investments and everyone believes him 🤡

Those exist, but in my experience imbecility is well distributed in the population, irregardless from the education level. This is also strongly supported by electoral polls that group their results by this datum.
People who have a degree of course won't tell you that a degree is useless, but that's only because if they did you'd (reasonably) ask "then why the heck did you pursue one?". However, they'll make similar statements about degrees in other fields, because essentially they're no different than the random boomer with elementary school level that get systematically indoctrinated by religious/political cults.

@HannibalAteMeOut Yep.
Now, if you don't mind, I'm going back to bash those neanderthals who ruin some good pizza with their sick choice of fruit toppings! 🥴🍍🐑😌

Still pisses me off when people say that University isn’t worthwhile because “well, I know lots of people who did well and didn’t go to university”. Far too many stats papers provide substantial evidence that attending university produces better outcomes

They're not useless. But they're too expensive. Tuition fees are a liability.
I wish education was free, so everyone could have an equal chance at succeeding in life

@rrraksamam that's also something, but trust me it also happens in countries with free education.

There are university degrees and then there are university degrees.
I don't rate a degree in Klingon on the same level as a physics degree.

@Whodunnit depends on how you use each one and how much critical thinking you have
Pretzel · 61-69, M
plenty of idiots with degrees as well.
I work for a guy that is extremely well read and knowledgeable on subjects - he's done his studying without the ivy covered walls.
sadly a sheepskin doesn't prevent brain decay

@Pretzel exactly, it's a disappointment when people lile that have money to "study" but genuine people often don't.

I suppose there’s plenty of that from both sides, lol.

Yeah but you have to choose your major wisely and make sure it is the right thing for you to have for a career. I have heard of people getting education degrees and when it came time to teach in a classroom they couldn’t handle dealing with children all the time. And some majors don’t have enough well-paying jobs to support careers that pay off.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
They're not completely wrong though, they're useless unless you take the time to learn the subjects. Most people do not end up using their degrees.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@MartinTheFirst imagine having to cook trash for mcdonalds instead of all the good stuff you're used to making 😬 yeah that'd be a waste
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@MartinTheFirst I like working with patients honestly, I want something that's as close to people as possible. I love having to plan people's care holistically.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@HannibalAteMeOut Oh right! 🤗
Glassysky · 26-30, M
The distinction here is random university degrees are a scam, unless you're well off. Like say, a bachelors in arts, english, some minority studies etc
However, programming, medical, engineering, fields like this require study, not something you can really learn "online".

People like to justify their own lack of education and they do so with anecdotal evidence for degrees being unnecessary, such as how they made it without one as if that proves the case.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@SW-User and that "they made it" is questionable
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I personally think lifelong education is a worthy goal in and of itself. It's not just about work, you expand your worldview, knowledge and grow as a person.
The only criticism I have is that degrees, at least here in South Africa and in the US are ridiculously expensive.

What if you have a BA & Msc but don't use them for your work = waste of time
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@SW-User I don't really view it as a waste of time at all but that's for another discussion
SW-User
@HannibalAteMeOut Correct, my Msc did give me 5 years in a great job with good staff. Covid was the killer of which no standard of education could have helped.
