John saw a new heaven (was something wrong with the old heaven?) and earth, the old heaven and earth having been destroyed.
But the Jehovah's Witnesses say, contrary to this verse, that the earth will last forever and will never be destroyed. They have to say this because they believe that heaven filled to capacity (144,000) in 1935. The overflow crowd will stay here on earth.

@BlueSkyKing It can be said that a person who has a dramtic change in their life is a new person.. It does not mean their body had to die or be destroyed or that even their past personality had to be destroyed.. They have simply had a dramatic change and they are percieved as being a as a New person..
Same thing happens to countries.. In the past the USA was a series of colonies of Great britian with a monarch ruled from London.. but things changed so dramaticaly that a new independant nation was established.. But it had the same forrests the same rivers the same towns and farms and ports that it had before..
But the Jehovah's Witnesses say, contrary to this verse, that the earth will last forever and will never be destroyed.
The earth as it is now will be destroyed.. That does not mean the earth itself will be destroyed.. But ""forever"" thats an entirely different matter.. forever is time everlasting..
They where and are wrong.. That's one of the reasons they are considered a cult to most other Christian denominations.. if you read the account of Revelations on the 144,000 they are identified as Jewish innocents saved at the end times.. They are a separate special group.. Christians in the same chapter are called a multitude so large that no man could count them..
(Revelation 7:9) "After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;"
(Revelation 7:13-14) "And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? {14} And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."
