Ephesians 4:30 What does it mean?

Ephesians 4:30

King James Version

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
The chapter starts out talking about being worthy of the vocation that you are called. He then goes on to tell us things we should or should not be doing to live up to it. By not doing this we grieve the Holy Spirit of God. He says don't do that. We have to live in a way that pleases the Lord, throughout our lives.

We are sealed to the day of Redemption. It states this sealing is through the Holy Spirit. To be sealed is to be closed securely, fastened or establish, secure. Redemption is Christ's Atonement, which he did so that we can be saved from sin. Ephesians 1 also talks about this in verse 13 and 14. Verse 14 states that it is the "earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

It means when we sin against God we grieve the Holy Spirit, whom God gave us upon our accepting him as our personal Savior. The Holy Spirit himself, is our "Seal of Salvation", in other words, when we receive the Holy Spirit, it proves that we have accepted Jesus as our Savior. All who ask Jesus to come into their heart and life as their personal Saviour, do receive this Holy Spirit. No one can break that Seal from God.

Do not do things that are grievous to your creator, that which is wicked

I would also advise you not to deal with people who answer your questions with answers like:

It means “Go to the pub. It’s your round.”

Such people obviously are not Christians and do not have your best interests at heart..

When christians do evil or share the message of God in a bad way, or a way that The Holy Spirit does not desires it to be shared, it grieves the Holy Spirit..

We should always try our best to be loving and paitient with others.. We should do our best to resist any earge to denegrate or hate others.. If the Holy Spirit wants to see someone saved and you deal very badly with that person you have frustrated the Holy Spirit..

@Adstar I would like to add that Christians being humans will from time to time stuff up and end up grieving the Holy Spirit.. But the good news is that When we become Christians we are raised to the position of being Adopted Children of God and God is Long Suffering toward us not willing that any of us should be perish but that we should be saved..

A loving Father forgives His Children again and again and again and again... If you do something bad simply acknowledge it to God in a simple prayer and thank Him for paying the penalty for that sin that you just did..

(2 Peter 3:9) "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."

It means don't annoy the Holy Spirit by whose hand you are going to be redeemed.
