Christians, should you be eating meat? In order to find out, answer this question for yourself: Is it right to enjoy the product of torture?

Because the animals we eat are undeniably and brutally tortured, many of them from the moment of their birth to their painful, terrifying death.
But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.
Just like you to misunderstand a verse of scripture taken out of context! 😃😃😃
@1354swrdt

Well then do correct me.
In this context, how am i misinterpreting " If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning." ?

*waits for speedy to google an interpretation he thinks will be favourable*

Now what is the context Paul is speaking into?@Pikachu
@1354swrdt

He's teaching Christians to follow their conscience and not to judge other Christians for following theirs.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Actually if you look at the context it’s the problem of meat offered to idols. @Pikachu

The wording of the Greek is ‘whatever is not of faith is sin’@1354swrdt
@1354swrdt

Oh of course. But the Bible is meant to be be just as true for us as it was for them and since modern Christians are certainly not worried about eating unclean or food offered to an idol....that's clearly not the important takeaway from Paul's message here.

The question stands.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Yes but the point is we must understand the context the get the point. Meat sold in the markets in those days was likely to have been offered to idols before being sold which posed a problem of faith for some Christians. Now Paul tells them that as ‘an idol is nothing’ to go ahead and eat but if their faith will not allow it to refrain as it would be sin for them to do so as a violation of conscience.
A modern example think of Chariots of Fire movie. Eric Liddell was brought up a strict sabbatarian - to play games on a Sunday was wrong. Now Christians today might have a more relaxed view but for Liddell it would have been a sin to run on Sundays even in the Olympics. Of course, we know the story!
Getting on to meat the Bible tells us it is fine to eat meat. But if a Christian believes it is wrong then of course he should refrain and we respect him. And btw we do believe in animal welfare. I do not personally eat black pudding Genesis 9:4 @Pikachu
@1354swrdt

Sorry, in this case the appeal to context of the time doesn't help because again, modern Christians are not worried about eating meat offered to idols and therefore this cannot be the true meaning of writing if indeed it is meant to kind Christians even to this day.
. But if a Christian believes it is wrong then of course he should refrain and we respect him.
lol yup. That's what i said. But additionally if you don't think what you're doing is right and you do it anyway then you're being a bad Christian.

The question stands.

Well of course. But it does give people like you the opportunity to pour self-righteous judgment so you should be grateful! 😃 @Pikachu

@Pikachu That won't stop people like @1354swrdt from trying that tired old tactic.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
What tired old tactic. Won’t stop people like you continuing in your ignorance either@LordShadowfire
@1354swrdt *sigh*
So when the discussion is getting away from you, you turn back to personal criticism.
Strike one.
@LordShadowfire
Evidently not lol
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Not at all. The guy is ignorant. Nothing personal. The problem is you like to dish it out but you can’t take it. You are not mature enough for robust argument@Pikachu
@1354swrdt

Lol this from the guy who just switched from "mature discussion" to personal criticism when he found himself at a disadvantage.
Hypocrisy is not a good look but since you have taken this step I guess our mature discussion is at an end.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Funny when you do it it’s ok but when I do it it’s suddenly hypocrisy, I’d ask you to look out who is being the hypocrite! 🤣@Pikachu
@1354swrdt lol my last post in the discussion was about the meaning of the passage.
Your response was personal criticism lol
Sorry, I can't take seriously a grown man who responds with " I know you are but what am iiii?!"

But you've made it clear that you're finished with the discussion so I'll leave you to your mean-spirited posturing😊
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Sorry that you cannot take any form of argument without responding to it with self
Righteous indignation. But that is your p
nature to respond with that kind of posturing and accusation. You really are hopeless at conducting a rational discussion. The problem is when the discussion gets too near the bone you feel threatened and flight @Pikachu

@1354swrdt Look who's talking, Mr. Ad Hominem Attack.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
Look at what you have written and see who is making ad hominem attacks 😃@LordShadowfire
LordShadowfire · 100+, M
@1354swrdt Still you. You accused me of being a communist because I don't believe in your particular god. You're also guilty of the poisoning the well fallacy.
1354swrdt · 70-79, M
I didn’t accuse you of being a communist I just gave you an example of the glories of atheism. With all you’re having and puffing he just cannot seem to get any sense at all@LordShadowfire
