Your post reminded me of a word chain a Navy bud and I came up with over a half century ago. It contained the word "tonnage". It started out with the word prophylactic then about 20 words and phrases later the linkages became...

...nutmeg which morphed into megaton then into tonnage and out of that word came Edge of Night then nighttime became Timex...

ending much later with ice hockey pro into prophylactic. :D
