if elevators or escalators hadn't been invented do you think CEO and owners would have their offices on the ground floor and make everyone work up

like a status symbol. so a building with 40 floors, all the lower workers have to walk up the 40 flights.

No. They would have people carry them up stairs, or hoist them using manual elevator systems. The status symbol would be in having the people putting in labor to elevate them.

The way many have drivers instead of driving themselves.

Ropes where used for thousands of years. That was the most basic elevator. Even monkeys use vines.
