Who wants to see a real live woolly mammoth?

Is it ethical to reproduce long extinct species? Just asking this esteemed group of philosophers.

In the Pleistocene era, Wooly Mammoths were heavy upon the Steppes in Russia...which was then a temperate zone. It is no longer a temperate zone because of...the Wooly Mammoth extinction.

TREES melt permafrost, and the Wooly Mammoths used to pull down trees. IF...and this is a big if...the trees on the Russian Steppes continue to grow unchecked by man or Mammoth the permafrost will begin to melt...and if it does...methane will be released into the atmosphere in untenable amounts.

@4meAndyou Thanks for that thoughtful answer. Does this imply a big benefit to reinstating them? Any downsides?
4meAndyou · F
@irishmolly72 Yes, there IS a benefit to re-instating them. They will de-forest the tundra, and make it frozen again.

@irishmolly72 And I should have mentioned that if the tundra thaws, tons of methane gas will be released.

Did nobody watch Jurassic Park?
Budwick · 70-79, M
I get upset over elephants caged in the zoo.
A woolly mammoth? No, wrong time, wrong place, just wrong.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Budwick OK. A followup question... is there a way to stop it if you wanted to?

It'll probably be in the next Jurassic Park movie. Along with the T-Rex and other dinosaurs, we'll become a modern version of the Flintstones.

@Barefooter25 Yabba Dabba Doooooooooooo! 🤪

I suppose not, but I still remember when I was a small child, and my father told me that they were trying to do this. I can't not be excited about it. xD

I just don't see the point. I'd rather see research dollars going to cancer or spinal cords

Interesting philosophical and ethical question...is the evolution of species an ethical process? have humans screwed up nature too much?? Is there danger in brining back beings that have gone extinct?? Is there benefiut--new discoveries of cures for diseases? Hmmm...I also fear humans tampering too much with nature...we somehow end up using much of our knoewledge to create weapons of mass destruction, like nuclear weapons and poinsous substances...yet science has helped make life easier and less dangerous in some ways,,,and we do live much longer,,,or is that merely selfish?

I think we do have everything to create the woolly mammoth.. but should we? I don't think so, the planet is not suitable for it anymore
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
I don't know if it's ethical but I REALLY want to see woolly mammoths!
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@ServantOfTheGoddess Even if it is unethical?
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@irishmolly72 I still want to see them!

I think humans need to leave mother nature alone. Didn't we learn anything from killer bees ?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
As ethical as causing the extinction of hundreds and thousands of species.
bhatjc · 46-50, M
Yes. I would love to see one. I know they are working on cloning.
No. They died out for a reason.
