Do you believe in Ghosts?

My mum swears she saw her friend, who died of cancer, in our kitchen once. Months after she'd died. My mum does not really believe in anything, not god or the afterlife and she hates the supernatural as a concept. But she swears she saw her and it freaks her out because she cannot explain it. I don't know what to think.

I always ask this: Give a clear definition of what are ghosts. How is this known? Why must they be believed without evidence?
