Mysteries of the Universe

Between folks here and my tendency to read novels set in the UK, I’ve long been mystified by the “chocolate digestive.” It seemed to me that it must be a very popular fiber type wafer like those cardboard Metamucil things my mother used to gnaw on. I imagined the whole of the UK was regular as clockwork as pervasive as things seemed to be. 😆

We were in a hallmark store a few months ago and Lo! There’s a whole display of “Irish foods.” I got me some Barry’s Irish breakfast tea - very nice - some Scottish shortbread cookies - delicious but sat like a rock - and YES! The mysterious chocolate digestives!! I was ridiculously excited. 😂

Imagine my confusion to find they’re like a lightweight graham cracker with a thin chocolatey smear. I actually really liked them - they’re not icky sweet or heavy - but alas. Still no idea why they got stuck with what strikes me as the somewhat unappetizing moniker of “digestive.” 🤷‍♀

I’ve wondered about that for the last 60 years.

Thank you for posting this.

I always pictured a mother saying to her children, “If you are very good, each of you will get a digestive biscuit.”

Then again, the US would do well to dial back our overindulgence of sweets and carbs.

@Mamapolo2016 I can imagine my face had my mother ever said that to me. 🤣

The food situation in America has been disgusting for a long long time. That dialing back is made as difficult as possible. It doesn’t surprise me that more don’t manage it.

Chocolate digestives are quiet simply the best biscuit (cookie). They are non negotiable too, the reason I could never permanently move to the USA. 😂😂

@OldBrit I don’t question this! I’m not a cookie lover in general, but I thought these were delightful. 😄

They were originally invented by doctors around 1840 and they had sodium bicarbonate added to aid digestion, the chocolate came later.

@PatientlyWaiting25 I could hug you! 😂😄👏👏👏👏

@V00doo oh they only had the milk chocolate here. Dark would be nummy! 😄
Probably thought to aid digestion...
@JustNik I cannot see that.

@SomeMichGuy oh sorry. She said “They were originally invented by doctors around 1840 and they had sodium bicarbonate added to aid digestion, the chocolate came later.” 🙂
@JustNik Thanks! Makes more sense than the primary motivation behind "graham crackers"...
