It's not specified, but I assume that you're asking about the visual arts: paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. I had a week of art history classes this summer taught by the director of the local university's museum, so I know a little bit about this topic.

Most art is made "for art's sake" - that is, to be viewed and judged and appreciated. In this case, while trivial, art is meant for delight. Humans decorated clay pots, not to make them more practical, but to be pleasing to the eye and to have something to do. A form of entertainment then, much as we visit art museums for entertainment today. Other than entertainment at the time however, such creations now only serve as insight to the cultures of the past, which is valuable in and of itself depending on who you're talking to.

More current functions of art include communication, commentary, and persuasion. With communication I refer to areas such as graphic design, where people communicate ideas, beliefs, and other messages through their art. Commentary ranges from impressionist art to political comics as statements on whatever the artist wants to make a statement about. Persuasion can be done through either of those two or another way, but the basic idea of persuasive art is simply to persuade the viewer to agree with whatever the artist is proposing. It could be persuading you to believe that one thing is better than another, or that we need to rally against a perceived enemy.

So I suppose that art, today, isn't directly beneficial to society aside from expression, and could potentially cause harm if some persuasive art succeeds in persuading a group to do something bad. In the end, art is only as valuable and beneficial as a person decides to make it.

Art museums, on the other hand, are economically beneficial, but I won't get into that because this is already far too long and it was only briefly discussed in class. I hope this helped answer your questions!

Art is a way of expression. It can aid communication greatly.
People who are unable to express themselves verbally or physically can sometimes through art. Especially children.
Encoraging peoples creativity helps them understand their individuality and can help us all see how we all see and entuprate things so differently.

I think we should encourage art much more in children. Ive recently left my job in a school and one of my bug bares was the way art is taught. Kids are not given free range to express themselves.....things are rushed and have to be done a certain way. As a creative type it bugged me greatly!!! Lol.

Art is another form of documenting history

I don’t know what it provides to society (not much probably) but it really calms me down. At the end of the day, that’s what it all comes down to. How does it affect YOU

@JaggedLittlePill i can wander at masterpieces for hours and I understand the historical importance of art,yet if I think of it that way,it takes away from the experience. I like to create and feel art. I don’t like to put it in a box with the rest of” things that’s important and good for us” stuff. It just is for me. An experience

@SW-User It can be all of those things. How you experience art is subjective. That does not diminish or change that it is an important part of society and is directly related to the culture it was created within. it shows us about the artist who created it, their beliefs and dreams, their creative abilities. It can be many things all at once and in various many forms. One person can look at a work of art and see nothing while another can look at it and see everything. Art is not just a painting placed in a museum. Art is music and lyrics, art is the written words of an author crating a story inspired by current social issues, art is the etching inside the tombs of Pharaohs.

in terms of a society? Very little. it provides cultural touchstones and little else. In terms of the individual however it can create abstractions and new ways of thinking. Impossible to measure that in any meaningful way

It is beneficial I think. It allows people to express themselves in many ways. It is a release for many people.
It often expresses more than words can.
I think it's only hurtful if it causes you to cut off your ear or some such thing.
Can help but feel the church could near end world hunger if they sold a painting/sculpture or 2 out of their coffers.. why they sit on and growing that wealth if it’s not for the needy?
