Some cats don't like the face to face, it could seem confrontational. I had two cats from the same litter, one would greet everyone with a nose bump, she would cry at you until you greeted her properly. The other one is very affectionate, but she feels uncomfortable with most people trying to get that close and personal (only I'm allowed😻), it's definitely a proximity thing and differs greatly among individuals.

@UnderLockDown Well, every now and then I'll catch him purring while I hold him and give him kisses on the cheek. Other times he meows at me like "Stop, that mom."

@perceptivei Could be sound, try making the same sound when you call him to eat, or try talking quietly to him when you're face to face and see how he responds. If he doesn't tell you to stop, it's the kissing noise he doesn't like.
Could be he's just moody.😼
Either way, give him an extra hug from me, I love all the kitties.🤗

@DomMan67 I doubt he'd even like it, because I don't have a sandpaper tongue.
Oh, well. I'll continue to give him kisses even if he doesn't like it. 🤷♀
