It's not uncommon for people to feel a sense of relief or comfort when they see others struggling with the same addiction, but in a more severe way. This phenomenon is often referred to as "downward comparison." It's a psychological mechanism where individuals compare themselves to others who are worse off, which can temporarily boost their self-esteem and make them feel better about their own situation.

I get it… but the people worse off could be a glimpse of future you if you continue down the path you’re on.
That’s how I looked at it anyway.
Take care ❤

I can see that giving a sense of personal control during the storm. I had to join the military to get out of my mess.

I am trying to control my addiction, because if I don't control then it will only harm me not society!
meh. not very bad. not great. totally understandable to want to see people with similar issues.

I get that
WildWings · 70-79, M
That is understandable.
SinlessOnslaught · M
It's okay as long as you wouldn't do anything to hurt them.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Maybe? It depends on what you're addicted to.
iamisa · 18-21, F
@DunningKruger really? why would it depend?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@iamisa Is what you're addicted to something harmful, like heroin? Is it something more innocuous, like gummy bears or scrolling on your cellphone?
If it's a bad addiction, then yeah, anything that makes you feel better about having it is by definition bad. If it's an innocuous addiction then it doesn't really matter that much.

@DunningKruger ok makes sense now
ImperialAerosolKidFromEP · 51-55, M
I guess that partly depends on why you feel better? So why do you feel better?
iamisa · 18-21, F
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP cause I realize there are people that have it much worse than me
ImperialAerosolKidFromEP · 51-55, M
@iamisa ok, and what do you do with that feeling? Do you feel empowered to improve your situation or do you feel complacent?
iamisa · 18-21, F
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP maybe a bit of both
Convivial · 26-30, F
Depends on the addiction
WildWings · 70-79, M
What are you addicted to?
Every addiction is bad
Softy1 · M
You are addicted to having random thoughts?
