i know, we used to get pulled up by teachers if our ties were not straight or shirts hanging out, but most didn't let that happen because we knew the rules.

Ladybird, you are so right. It's natural for kids to want to rebel at a certain age; we all got away with what we could. However, if they don't learn about standards, they'll always look scruffy, even when they are being interviewed for jobs.

I hate seeing shirts not tucked into trousers though; I come out in mental hives!

I'm so glad I went to a ghetto public high school where you could wear pretty much whatever you wanted. I enjoyed using my clothes as a canvas.
SW-User
But at least with school uniform you didn't have to think about what you were going to wear that day. It took me all my effort to get up in morning and drag myself out of the house, never mind choosing an outfit. It's a Venus and Mars thing, I guess!🙂

The reality here is that teenagers and especially teenage girls need guidance and support while they deal with learning about their new sexuality.

There is a maze of ways they can get into trouble and they need firm parenting that sets strict standards to come out on the other side with a proper grasp of what sexuality should be about.

Those outfits that call out a girl for her sexual parts and ignore the rest of her are not the way to go about that!

Having grown up in the 1960's, this sounds just like the sort of thing grownups used to say about my generation.

@JoanieNewHampshire: I graduated in '69.I was able to understand the schools objection to mini skirts. Yet never could figure why they objected to Maxi (Granny-Dress)that went to the floor.
@Carla1951: I remember all of those stupid regulations. Prudish displays in attempt to control the masses and instill good virtues! Lol. Boys were not allowed to wear shorts. The thing to do then was to come in with your girlfriends skirt and knee socks on over them.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@Carla1951: It's all to do with control. They didn't object to maxi-skirts per se, they objected to students thinking for themselves and choosing to wear long skirts. Put simply, headteachers are control freaks, they'd never get away with their ridiculous demands in any other environment.

I was never in a Parochial School. Forgive me for appearing out of line.
One suggestion would be to take some photos and present them to the school board. Have them pass around the photos at their next meeting, along with a written note.... "This is what we are presenting to the world. What we as a school are allowing our children to know is permissible."
Please do this. Or ask another if they would. Find out when the next P.T.A. is and pass around the photos.
This is NOT to reprimand the parents. Most of them work. These children are in the care and protection of the School. THEIR job is to protect!

By chance if the school ignores you, Search to see who else you could send it to. When a child presents herself looking like a 'Lady of the Night' Something needs to be done!

Know if you anonymously mail the photos to the school the letter will be trashed.
Today's Children, Tomorrows Hookers.
Your job certainly is not to humiliate these children. Your job is to protect!
I will assume when this is read, I will be chopped down and used as kindling for nest years winter.

Another point to make at their P.T.A. ASK! "When was the last time YOU as a parent came to the school? Looked around? Walked the halls to see these teachers turning their heads the other way?"
This is the Unspanked Generation brought to you courtesy of your friendly Leftist ideologue – the one with the bag of permissive parenting nonsense. This is not the bitching of a grumpy old lady, but rather the consensus of civilization from its beginning, until the last fifty years when Rousseau and his crowd got the upper hand:https://similarworlds.com/9895914-I-Think-Liberals-and-Leftists-Are-Killing-the-Worl/628177-I-think-for-many-parents-when-smacking-fell-out-o

@beckychandler: Another not grumpy old women checking in here. And let me say a proper uniform teaches some amazing lessons for a girl when it comes to her schooling!

That sounds exactly like when I was in school.

Their are the kids that are in school now which is a different time to when you were a kid
Just like when you were a kid was a different time to when I was a kid
It's called different times
It is different times, I remeber the same complaint by some during my school days and our attire. But honestly in many kids, especially today, it's a great indicator of their motivation, or their willingness to follow a trend. We should allow some expressions and tastes in individuality, but we should also teach what is professial and socially respectful. Not always an easy thing. But without trying we loose the values that keep society and professionalism at its best.

Hmm. In my day we had just the same - and we had corporal punishment for the worst excesses lol!

We had the cane at school and other things
jackcros · 70-79, M
@JanDaw69: failure to dress smartly , even down to wearing school caps on bus journeys to and from school, meant a whacking
SW-User
@oxoxo Not being correctly dressed in full uniform, even out of school, would have got me the slipper at best and possibly the cane.
There is a very thin line between conformity and freedom of expression. I'm glad we aren't forcing the conformities we used to. I fear the irresponcible freedom of expressions we see examples of today.
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
As for myself, I never understood why the 'Catholic Schools' Required a uniform. UNLESS the girls planned on attending 'The Order'
Neither. I agree, sloppy dressing is sloppy dressing and reflects the attitude of the person. At 62 though, I've seen this rational for most of my life. There is some amount of truth that if your comportment is conservatively attractive you will get more attention in the professional world. I wish this thinking could be taught. I see to much "express yourself" energy get wasted on those who are simply just to lazy to care. Or to weak to go beyond a trend.

Your post reminded me of lining up to be whacked for having dirty gym shoes. Happy days!

you are not grumpy, kids these days have gone mad.
Carla1951 · 70-79, F
LadyB, we lived in a different time.

I like to see girls in school uniforms
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@kevin5:
I like to see girls in school uniforms
Why? I know some men do. I think it's a powerful argument against school uniforms, they sexualize children.
ladybird · 46-50, F
@suzie1960: Indeed, just look at Japan, where it's virtually a prostitute uniform!
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@ladybird: I see. That could be why UK schools have them, they widen girls' employment opportunities. :( I suppose the same applies to "school boys" to some extent.
Pop0159 · 61-69, M
Mine never had uniforms but were taught how they dressed and presented themselves said alot about themselves tonothers and to dad .. .. and there are consequences for saying the wrong things to dad .. .. ..
MickB72 · 51-55, M
No, you're right. They look like tramps and most act like tramps. How can people respect anything else, when they can't even respect themselves? Once basic standards start to slip, it's only downwards from there.
