I School Uniform

Seeing kids near the local school, well they just look so scruffy!

Boys - scuffed shoes, shirt tails hanging out, ties short and hanging loose around the neck.

Girls - skirts that look more like wide belts that look like they should be on a street corner.

Am I turning into a grumpy old woman or just jealous I could never get away with that, hmmm....

Ladybird, you are so right. It's natural for kids to want to rebel at a certain age; we all got away with what we could. However, if they don't learn about standards, they'll always look scruffy, even when they are being interviewed for jobs.

There are two issues. One is the streetwalker look of some girls, who seem to compete to see who has the shortest 'skirt': can you imagine the peer pressure on more modest girls?

Secondly there is scruffiness. This is not just an issue with one school. I see it all over the city, even with boys in private schools sometimes. At least girls in private schools have to wear a (semi)decent length of skirt.

I remember the girls at my school in the 70s. They showed us how they would fold the waistband of their skirts over and over to make the length of the skirt shorter. Unfortunately, it was never for our benefit; they usually had their eye on some lad 2 years above us! I guess nothing has changed much...

Yes, that happened, we did it too, but had to be careful it wasn't too obviously above the required length (had to touch floor when kneeling) to avoid punishment. We could never have dreamed of wearing a 'belt skirt'! We may as well have announced we were taking up prostitution.

I hate seeing shirts not tucked into trousers though; I come out in mental hives!

I'm so glad I went to a ghetto public high school where you could wear pretty much whatever you wanted. I enjoyed using my clothes as a canvas.

But at least with school uniform you didn't have to think about what you were going to wear that day. It took me all my effort to get up in morning and drag myself out of the house, never mind choosing an outfit. It's a Venus and Mars thing, I guess!🙂
